Good questions Della.
I explained before why first degree murder charges weren't issued earlier. They didn't have the proof they needed to make it stick. These investigators weren't messing around and wanted all elements of this crime investigated, so they could prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

Charges have been upgraded including Federal Charges. It was refreshing that this was so completely investigated before all charges were filed. Too much rush to judgement in the last few years with the media trying cases before all the evidence was found and documented. Lifetime in prison is certain and maybe the death penalty if the law allows. He faces a long list of both state and federal charges.

Killer was captured yesterday and set to appear in court today. He is held on $5 million bond and faces multiple State and Federal charges.

He was spotted in a field by a lady visiting a friend. They stopped the police driving around in the area and more cops were called and he was captured.

Latest reports say he is now being charged with 1st degree murder and explained that the charge of second degree murder earlier today was their standard plea to obtain a search warrant.
Minnesota does not have the death penalty, so the maximum sentence would be life in prison without parole, if convicted.
“It is common practice for the office to charge second-degree murder to secure a warrant as quickly as possible, which occurred in this case,” says a news release from the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.

Trail cameras are like wildlife cameras, hunters use them to get alerts on their phones whenever it turns on due to a motion sensor. I had read that they found him due to a trail cam, too.

Something's off here especially for someone/the suspect working 'professional' security services.

-His wife was captured with passports and money. Yet he's claiming poor to get an attorney.

- I was going to say since he did some work for the state he may have had to work with or do business with the people he killed. Maybe even an affair but his wife appears to know about if not have participated in the murders. So did he feel the victims didn't give him what he wanted out of government related work?

-Then the suspect did not have the decency to take himself out. I wonder if he thinks he has something to deal or plea bargain with. Beginning to think the lists an flyers were a misdirect.

It still comes back to some cold blooded killings or murders. With some rage because I heard one victim shot many times overs.

Hopefully Minnesota has the death penalty.

Proposed Federal charges.

Federal prosecutors announced that Boelter is facing the following federal charges:

  • Stalking of Melissa Hortman – use of interstate facilities
  • Stalking of John Hoffman – use of interstate facilities
  • Murder of Melissa Hortman through use of firearm
  • Murder of Mark Hortman through use of firearm
  • Shooting of Melissa and Mark Hortman – firearms offense
  • Shooting of John and Yvette Hoffman – firearms offense

The names on his list are largely Democrats or people with ties to Planned Parenthood or the abortion rights movement.

He is a fundamentalist Christian, usually Pentecostal, and has made several missionary trips to Africa where his sermons speak against Americans for their abortion rights and LGBTQ rights.

I expect he sees himself as a martyr to the cause of saving babies.

How Christians can ever convince themselves that Jesus wants them to commit murder is beyond me.

The perp is in custody, and the case will now grind its way thru our courts. it will take years. No death penalty in Minnesota, which is fine with me - I oppose it.

Not a chance he will get a pardon for the Fed charges.

I knew this topic couldn't be discussed without politics since it was deemed a political assassination. Strange that no one mentions that Melissa Hortman voted with the Republicans on no freebies for illegals. She leaned conservative on many issues.

Is discussing the death penalty political? Not sure where this forum draws the line or how the owners define politics.

He wasn't a Christian as defined by his deeds. Christians are defined by deeds, not words, robes, or rituals.

It seems that as long as we avoid discussions along party lines, we can usually be civil. Death penalty, gun control, free speech, protests, and other issues, can be discussed as long as we avoid party politics.

Thanks! Not sure how that can be done since all these issues are seemly controlled by party lines. I am an independent so no party affiliation.

In this case, I support the death penalty. It serves no purpose to keep this deranged killer in prison for life at a great cost to tax payers. I am not sure if federal law has the death penalty or if it would supersede the state or not on this issue.

Federal Indictment. Counts 3 and 4 have death penalty specifications. If by Superceding MN law, you mean what Sovereign has the right to Prosecute first, that will be decided by State and Federal Attorneys. I don't think on such a murder charge, Federal law pre-empts the State on who has the right to conduct a trial first?

The death penalty costs the taxpayer more than keeping the criminal in prison for life.
"AI: Studies consistently show that the costs associated with death penalty cases, including lengthy trials, appeals, and specialized legal representation, far outweigh the costs of incarcerating someone for life. "

I'm against the death penalty because I am a Christian* and I like to think everyone has a chance for redemption. I also know I wouldn't want to be the executioner, so I don't want to ask anyone else to do it.

*When I call myself a Christian I'm saying I believe in Christ as a divine being and my redeemer, not that I'm any particular type of person myself.
