How are you in an emergency?

Thankfully I haven't had to deal with very many emergencies & the ones I did were not that difficult to help with.

I'm a viscerally sensitive person and like being so. I avoid taking medicines that deaden my feelings even aspirin. Dentists are usually surprised how much novacaine it takes to deaden my jaws.

I avoid experiencing painful or gory things so tend to be more sensitive when I do versus say those that watch horror and slasher movies that desensitize and pollute their minds so. Even something like being poked for my monthly blood test requires my holding my breath a moment. Do not know how I'd react in a bloody accident but expect my strong mind would overcome squeamishness for the sake of saving someone's life.

That noted, all my adult life as a single person, have participated in backpacking and skiing that has many potential dangers, so am experienced dealing with stressful situations requiring careful logical thought.

Lately I am terrible with emergencies. I often run for help or am upset until a thing is resolved. I never used to be this way but since I turned 70 I have become a bundle of nerves.

I feel for you Rose65. I am the same way - a deer in the headlights (as the say over here). I am pretty inept at fixing things and have to call in a repair person then they always seems to take advantage of my desperation. I was never taught to be self-reliant by my parents who always took care of things, so I just can't handle it when things go wrong.

On our flight from New York nonstop to Denver, I was notified by the Purser that a man onboard was having an apparent heart attack. We notified ATC and they summoned the EMT’s. We were over the southern part of Ohio, so we made an emergency landing in Columbus. The EMT’s were there and they came onboard and put him onto a gurney and off the plane and into their truck. We were back in the air in 20 minutes. The patient seemed in good spirits when he left the plane, so I hoped he did well.

I'm good in emergencies except fires because there is too much commotion and everything happening at once. If it's your place damaged you may have to hurry, pack up, move and drive to safety all in a matter of moments.

But blood and medical stuff I am ok with. Especially if it's someone else's blood.

I'm cooler than the other side of the pillow in a Jam. Saved a young boy's life once because I was measured and didn't panic.

However, if you burn the scallop potatoes I will spontaneously combust...you'll never hear the end of it from me! ;)

Fun Fact:

Stand under a doorway in an Earthquake...it's the strongest made part of the building.

I've lived through two earthquakes here, about a 5 magnitude. My mind went blank and I froze. All I could think of was the entire building collapsing. I would say I am not the greatest in a life-threatening emergency.

Thinking back on my life experiences, seems like I do okay
in emergency's.....caught a fire purposely set where I was
working and pulled the alarm and grabbed a extingusher to
work on it....once saved a person from choking with the heimlich manuver, once saw a bldg on fire, apt's, and went
to wake up bunches of folks.....so guess i did okay....
