How Did These Fads Start And Why?

Young ladies, in their 20's and above, that like young men with numerous tattoos.
Young men, same age bracket, that like young ladies with tattoos.
Young men that like to wear their baseball cap backwards (like a Catcher in baseball does).

Actually, I think this is much more of a "big city" type thing. I never once seen a young man, at a County Fair, showing livestock, with their baseball cap worn backwards.
Have never seen young farm/ranch men/ladies with tattoos.

Thing is, I don’t see any farm or ranch boys wearing there cap like that while driving a tractor in fields. Of course, I suspect, most folks in this forum have never been around farm or ranch teens, like I was. FFA and 4-H Clubs don’t put up with that kind of look.

And, how would you, as a parent, feel if your nice “clean cut” son or daughter brought home a friend/girlfriend/boyfriend that looked like this (tattoo’s and ball cap backwards) to meet you?

As for wife and I, we’d be having a FAST private talk with the son or daughter.

There's a whole social science behind how and why fads start. If you find the topic interesting I can recommend a fascinating book I read a while back:

The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell.

"The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire."

I don't mean to be a stick-in-the-mud, but I attribute all the tattoos, body piercings and wearing the ball cap backwards to an unchecked entertainment industry that glorifies rebellious youth behavior...all the while making enormous profits.

Hiding behind First Amendment right to free speech, taking no responsibility for the huge influence they have on society...just taking huge profits.

Fashion one way or another doesn't bother me. The boy or girl in question being a decent human who was going to be kind and considerate to my son/daughter - that's all that would matter to me.

All this is a 'fad' and no different than the fads we had that we grew up with.

I remember I wouldn't go along with all the guys in the class who had 'brush cuts' army style.

I hated the look and wouldn't get it done.

Then we had the big pants called drapes and the zoot suit look with the long key chains.

It makes me barf now when I look at the old pictures.

Everyone wanted to be the 'Fonz'.

It all passes.

Under the backward hat and the tatoos could be the nicest person in the world.

How about backward and upside down?

Or maybe sideways?

I agree, this makes no sense. He has to use his hand for shade because the visor is in back.

Or maybe it's best to stick with the good old days, when men wore sensible hats. (actually these were sensible; they folded down to protect in rain)

I grew up on a farm. I have a couple relatives still farming. We know what the bill of a ball cap is there for; sun shade, and use it for such.
Tattoos, and other 'fashion', is to separate one from 'all the others'. I was not allowed to wear jeans to school until high school, because they were 'work cloths'. It separated me, in a mostly negative way.
Like most all things, it can be taken to far, tattoos on the face are an extreme example. Tattoos are also seen as a declaration of maturity.
I have seen younger farmers, ranchers, etc. with tattoos. I've also seen more and more on teen girls. They are 'normal' (or very close to it) now.
I'm cool with non-extreme tattoos. But I just don't like 'body art' that is visible in public. Rings in lips or nose. Chrome balls in cheek or nose. And the big holes in ear lobes (some are BIG!).
I wonder if tattoos have become normal so people get the body art to separate themselves...

I don't like any of the fads mentioned here but can't criticize to much because back in the 50's the boys had cleats on their shoes, collar on the shirt turned up in the back and anything else to make them look like thugs. As for the tattoos, I was surprised to see that my daughter has two tiny baby feet tattooed just above her ankle. Each little foot has her child's name inside the foot. Discreet and I must admit, kind of cute.

Some folks refer to tattoos on women as "tramp stamps".

I have a tattoo, but it does not cover like wall paper, it is small, discreet and 59 years old.

I totally fail to understand wearing a hat backwards. The bill is a sunshade made to shade the eyes not the back of the neck.

They don't want to be called Rednecks...animated-laughing-image-0168.gif

Tattoos for guys and gals are big in Australia and some must cost thousands of dollars once completed.
I for one could not stand the pain and I grew up in an era that tattoos were for men only.
My Grampa had a tattoo on his left inside forearm of an anchor. By the time I knew what it was it had become blurry.
The tattoo was done by one of his brothers using the old fashioned Indian Ink and a needle.
Grampa aged 11 passed out from the pain but the tattoo was still there 80 years later.

I don't get the baseball cap thing at all. To me, the main purpose of wearing a baseball cap is to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun. So, why? Just to annoy their parents?

If I had to choose, I'd rather see tatoos and backwards caps than the fad of wearing your pants hanging down off their backsides, showing their underwear to the whole world, makes my blood boil!!!
