How do I change how I react?

I've been on walks with my dogs many times and randomly encountered unwelcomed dogs free roaming.
I've even snatched my belt off my jeans to use as some kind of weapon I guess.
Thing is, usually just having something like that in my hand was enough to stop them in their tracks if not drive them away.
Well that, a menacing glare and stern words. Probably been lucky too.

Sometimes I've carried a walking stick, although I've never had to use it.

I just avoid the whole possibility of another dog. I have three dogs, two of them are little, snacks on legs for mean dogs. The third is a 90lb chow I can't control on a leash, he is sweet, if he sees another dog he just wants to play. I know he looks scary to anyone else. He has pulled me down on more than one occasion.

I do not walk my dogs for that reason, the littles would be in danger, the big one puts me in danger. I am lucky I have a big fenced yard for them to play and potty. I do not travel because I do not want to board them.

That said, although it is unfortunate, you must do what is best for you and your pet. No walking, just outside to go potty when in a different environment. Is it fair, NO, but it is what has to done to keep both of you safe.
