How do I get rid of alerts after i've read them?

I don't think they are the same alerts. The same thread may send you multiple alerts as they may be updated many times.
 
If the alerts you are referring to are the ones under the BELL symbol, why do you need to mark them as "read"? I simply go through them and if I feel the need to respond I will. If not, they are forever lost in the ethernet. What am I missing?
 
Not sure what version of XenForo SF uses but it was reported that alerts were not auto-clearing in versions 2.2.16 and 2.3 U5

If you go click on the alert bell (because you have an active alert) and then click anywhere outside of it, you'll notice the alert remains until you manually clear it by clicking the individual alert or refreshing the page.

It used to clear by simply clicking the bell.
