How do people afford New York City?

It sounds a bit crazy but for some high income/net worth people it’s actually cost effective to live in Central New York with their families and commute by plane to New York City a few days each week.

Round trip airfare from Syracuse to New York City is currently $97.00.

For the amenities you have, apartments here in N.J. would be considered luxury apartments. Once they are labeled that way, the rents will be higher. Here are some examples...the top picture is in Hoboken and like the Jersey City apartment, it's several blocks from the water. The Weekhawken apartment is waterfront. No way in hell I'd pay those kind of rents without a water view. These were listed on Apartments.com and don't represent the average rents in N.J., but as mentioned previously, rents in these places are similar to NYC prices.

I know...right!! Well, I was curious and took a closer look. The $17,500 apartment is 4,830 sq ft, has 3 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, a yard and garden, security and sprinkler systems as well as other luxury apartment amenities. It is currently unavailable. But that's an insane price for an apartment! Might be good for someone with a family whose job requires changing locations frequently.

it's a status symbol. You can also question why people live in huge mansions in Beverly hills. Do they all have big families that need the huge space?

My sister lived for many years in a rent controlled apartment in Manhattan. The landlord got fed up with dealing with the city rules and told the tenants "the building is becoming a condominium, buy your apartment or get out. The timing was perfect. She retired and bought a home near her daughter in Florida.

That wasn't legal, most people in those instances get buyouts from the landlord.

My son, daughter-in-law, their two children and their neurotic dog live in a cramped two-bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side. Not the "posh" part but the grungy low 90s. Their apartment has a front desk but no other amenities. For the privilege of living there they pay something like $6500 a month.

They are looking in the suburbs but there is not a whole lot on the market right now.

I don't know why anyone would subject themselves to living in New York City, unless they are in a rent controlled apartment. And rent control is what keeps the housing market messed up.

I'm sure the next mayor will fix everything, ha ha ha.

You say how do people afford New York city... well try and afford London as well..

yesterday I was looking at cab prices..

I live 20 miles from the centre of London...

I was looking up train and tube prices to get to Trafalgar square from the nearest train station which is 25 miles from Trafalgar square ... and it's about £11.00 return.. going the same distance by cab costs between £380.00 & £460.00 approx... a 45 minute journey, I kid you not...

HollyDolly, I'm not sure that you meant 25 miles from Trafalgar Square when you said the nearest train station. I guess you probably meant 2.5 miles, and I think that Waterloo is probably closer than 2.5 miles from the square, although it's on the South side of the river.

I remember back when Thatcher was PM, i.e. the 80's the rent for a flat on Cadogan Square SW1 was £25,000 per year, that's just over £2,000 a month, and that was the 80's, which was 40 years ago. I shudder to think what the cost of rental in Cadogan Square would be now. Then again, there are lots of rich people in London, particularly the Russian, Middle Eastern, and Asian millionaires who seem to buy up anything that comes on the market as a bolt hole for the future.

No I meant my local train station is 25 miles from Trafalgar square... my house is 20 miles from trafalgar square...the cab wants around £400 to go from here to Trafalgar square..can you believe it...

Mind you in saying that.... about 12 years ago...my husband then, forgot something he needed at work, and he'd used my car to get to work... so I had to get a cab.. ..he works in your town BW at the TV studios... and the distance is about 15 miles from here and they charged me £60 even then

Ok. So she moved to Florida. She could not afford to live in NYC once she loose the apartment anyway.

HollyDolly, sorry I got the wrong end of the stick. Regarding the studios, I'm sure you're aware that Sky have built a new set of studios in BW. They're literally just off the A1 going North, and start behind what was the Holiday Inn hotel. The hotel is still there, but it's now called something else. So what used to be the GEC sports and football ground is now a set of around 9 or so sound stages for Sky.

Since the saving of the old Elstree studios (the ones next to Tesco) there's been a bit of a resurgence of TV and film production in BW. I believe The Crown was filmed there, and they used one of the studios for the BBC Dancing on Ice. The money they've earned has been reinvested in new studio space toward the back of the lot, and now, as well as the George Lucas stage there's another big one behind it.
