How do you escape from everyday life?

I read and take nature walks with the dog. We watch some wild animals. I've taught her to sit quietly and just watch reminding her that they are a much a part of nature as she is. We also listen to various birds and other sounds. She's a totally responsive animal and trusts me implicitly. I want her to live forever.

I listen to audiobooks when engaged in mundane tasks, like folding clothes or doing other chores around the house. It actually makes them enjoyable to the extent that I look forward to the opportunity to get back to my books by doing those chores.

I have a hard time just sitting down and listening to audiobooks, though. It feels like I'm not really doing anything, as apposed to reading books, which feels like I'm doing something constructive and productive. Because of a stigmatism (or an astigmatism, depending on your preference), I have trouble reading for longer than ten minutes or so. I get tired. It's almost like work, which is why I never read much when I was younger. It was just no fun and I hardly ever finished a book. With audiobooks, I'm getting through a book a week.

I've been working on Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment for over a month now, though. That's a tough one to get through. I don't really get the appeal. It's considered "great" literature, but like a lot of "great" literature, I just don't see it. One day, I'll finish it, I guess. Some day. I tend to prefer non-fiction.
What I remember about "Crime and Punishment" which I had to read for a class many years ago, is that the main character killed an old lady. That was horrific. I almost didn't finish it. Then he became very nervous, thinking those around him knew his secret. By the end of the story, he had come closer to God, if I remember right.

I don't feel the need to escape after 17 years here I still love my home. It is comfy for the two of us. In about a month DH and I will celebrate our 65th anniversary (yes I have allowed him to live). We will probably just go to a favorite place for dinner .

since i buried my last horse ive been lost.

now i take my dog for a hike most Every day, we may miss one here there but not many.
i have a number of decent trails not far away so short drives get me to good hiking places
where if you hike down you gotta hike back up.

other than that i seem to take a nap every afternoon after the hike.
watching the toob is pretty common now. then i fall asleep. lol.

when the time comes that im not able to take these daily hikes....im cooked.
i wont want to be here then.
being outside is the biggest joy of life nowadays.

I really enjoy hanging out at the airport one or two days a week. Sometimes I even hop on a plane to Chicago or Atlanta, have lunch and fly home. Just depends on my mood. I once called my wife and asked her to guess where I was, she asked where? I told her Las Vegas. She said that I didn’t even pack a bag. So what? I can buy what I need in the lobby at Caesar’s or the Venetian. I have done that more than once. My wife claims it’s what keeps our marriage interesting.
I am in Florida now, so I drive to the Tampa airport to watch the planes. There are a few good areas where I can get a reall great view.
Plane spotting is nothing new. Many people do it for a hobby.

I enjoy plane spotting, too. Whenever I am flying out somewhere, I arrive at the airport hours earlier just to watch the different aircraft. And then there's the people....

Good question, @dseag2. My everyday life is a mixed bag of things, none of which are unpleasant. My escape is always to think about traveling somewhere, research places to travel to and if I can afford it, book the travel.
It's a rainy, chilly day here today. Spring cleaning is just about finished (but there's always more I could find to do) so I'm daydreaming about where I'd like to travel to next.

I don't think I escape from everyday life...what is the point? My days are varied with time spent with family, walks, cooking, some cleaning and organizing, connecting with siblings and now with the weather getting warmer every day, I am outside planning the landscaping and updating the yard.

First, before dragging myself out of bed, I try to remember to thank God for another day, no matter how grumpy I am feeling.

Last week I baked two loaves of bread. I study things, always looking for something new to learn. I play with my cats, marveling at their agility and cleverness. I Am currently trying chair Tai Chi or Qui Gong. I also try to remember to do a gratitude list in my head. I stream stuff, and have re- introduced myself to old favorite shows. When the news gets too depressing, I turn to these old shows. Once in awhile, I have a nice chocolate binge.

I'm doing the same , well not daydreaming.. I'm actually doing an internet search of places I might want to visit.. not got someone else's choices to take into consideration any more..

I do that too; old shows that comfort (Frasier is my fave). That and audio books that make me smile and lighten my mood. :)

for me...i hike with my Daisy dog...outside in the hills and destroyed clear cut lands along the
recently dry reservoir. once one of the largest in the con-try. now nearly empty.
that can be pretty depressing.

then i return home smoke a doobie, have a shot of tequila and try to move into the evening and nite.
i awake Every morning in Pain and know i will get out and have a good hike with Daisy.

i find CBD to be very helpful in calming down my adrenals which have been reacting to pain now
for 22years.

for any of 'them' to call us or refer to us as "druggies" pisses me off.
im in PAIN resulting from a BAD SURGEON, dont screw with me on pain relief: i can get loud.

I escape to the water whenever I can...either the waterfront park in Hoboken, N.J. or our ocean front timeshare in Atlantic City, N.J. When I can't and feel the need, I ditch real life by watching my favorite shows.
I love being near water too! Back in the 70's I lived near Asbury Park fo about a year. I walked on the boardwalk or the beach whenever I could.

I have been to Hoboken, birthplace of Frank Sinatra, base ball and the zipper. I believe it was also the first place to sell Oreo cookies in New Jersey? :)

Before I know it, I can spend hours watching Youtube music videos, or whatever else strikes my fancy. I also spend a lot of time researching topics I am interested in. These are real time-wasters as I lose track of time, so I don't do that very often.

Once in awhile I watch tv. I can get into binge watching when I find a show I like, so like the above, I avoid it most of the time.

I read a lot of books, mostly.

I play with my dog.

These things keep my stress level down as long as I don't spend all night doing them. They also keep my procrastination levels up, which raises my stress level.

Absolutely music! I always play music in my car when I am going anywhere. It makes me feel so good. I'm playing it on iTunes as I type this. Sometimes I have to turn it off to make sure I am not making grammatical mistakes. :ROFLMAO:

Yes me too... Music in my car..music in my home... always... MUZZAK in the shops....not so much, that actually stresses me particualrly if it's in a clothing shop, and it's music aimed at the young..and it's LOUD...

Yes, I posted a couple of pictures I took in the Sinatra thread. The most recent is a statue they erected in the spot my favorite bench used to be. I can't find the other (a plague dedicated to him) in my photos at this time. You are correct about the Oreos, didn't check the other items. According to Wikipedia:
"The original design on the face of the Oreo featured a wreath around the edge of the cookie and the name "OREO" in the center.[15] In the United States, they were sold for $0.25 (equivalent to $7.02 in 2021) a pound (454 g) in novelty metal canisters with clear glass tops. The first Oreo was sold on March 6, 1912, to a grocer in Hoboken, New Jersey.[16]"

There's a shop called Flying Tiger (Copenhagen company) which sell all sorts of interesting things and whenever I am near one of their shops I pop in, sometimes just to listen to the music, they play pretty good stuff. There use to be a local art shop which had it's own radio station and played music which you seldom heard anywhere else, sadly the art shop is long gone, I use to love going there on a Sunday, sometimes I even bought something :D
