How Do You Feel About Caged Animals

At the moment we have a circus in Adelaide and some people are protesting about the use and abuse, as some see it of animals being forced to preform in the circus
I personally don't like caged animals/ Birds .... But do you think some animals enjoy performing ? Or maybe live longer than they would in the wild by being caged ...or being involved in a circus ?
I realise many animals kept in zoos would be extinct if not for wildlife parks and zoos , but many zoo's including Adelaide zoo have spent $ millions lately , renovating animal enclosures to make them larger and more like a natural home..
We have a open range wildlife park near a town called Murray Bridge, which is about an hours drive from Adelaide, We took the granddaughters there when they were small .
 

I don't like caged animals, and will no longer go to zoos or circuses. Having said that, I understand why some people like to take their children to see wild animals in real life, even if behind bars or in cages. I've heard and seen too many upsetting realities of animal abuse of elephants, etc. who are trained to perform tricks for entertainment of people. Many times negative, painful and abusive techniques are used by trainers to make those animals perform those unnatural acts. Well since you're talking about circus's, elephants aren't caged but they are chained and their imprisonment and abuse has been the subject of several ongoing court cases where awful videos of them being beaten have been shown into evidence. I think that Ringling Bros. Circus has finally decided to end their use of elephants in three years. Don't know why they have to wait so long but at least there's an end in sight to that abuse.

I don't think most animals enjoy doing tricks. I think if you gave them a choice, they'd rather hang out at the water hole or stroll the hillsides or do whatever it is that their species does.

I also don't think a traditional zoo with cement enclosures is suitable for wild animals but I have less of a problem with a wildlife park where they have some 'freedom'.
 

I enjoy going to the Zoo.. sorry.. We have two very nice ones... Lincoln Park and Brookfield here in Chicago... I've always enjoyed them.. and taking the grandkids.. So..?

I have seen elephants belonging to the zoo tied with chains and just rocking back and forth it's a heartbreaking site, and you can almost see the sadness in their eyes
 
Didn't like zoos even as a kid. I think we went to the San Francisco zoo once. I'd never go to a circus. And never have.
 
I'm the same always hated Zoo's and seeing animals caged from the time I was a child...cannot bear to see an Elephant chained or birds who in the wild would fly hundreds of miles a day cooped up in a 12x12 Cage !

I am ok up to a point with Safari Parks where the animals get to roam outside and only have to spend the night times within an enclosure.
 
I strongly object to cages and making animals perform. Some zoos are nice and give animals tons of room similar to their natural habitat.
 
I think we're changing folks. Maybe a lot slower than some would like, but once upon a time, people wouldn't even be giving any of this a thought! They're only animals - who cares right? So it's good that we talk about stuff like this because not ignoring the unpleasant stuff awakens society's conscience.
 
I won't go to zoos or circuses because I feel its inhumane to cage animals. They may live longer than they would in the wild, but there seems to be no quality whatsoever to such an existence. When I was little my dad used to take to a local zoo every week and I learned to absolutely HATE watching those large cats pace endlessly back and forth in cages almost too small to even hold them. It was sickening.
I don't know if animals "like" performing in any way. Domestic dogs probably do because they are social critters seeking approval, ( especially the approval of humans holding treats), but I think wild animals have survived very nicely for millenia with "performing", so I would say no.
 
When we traveled arround Australia for two years with our caravan, we visited an open range zoo in Dubbo, which is. In NSW .
We seen a tiger at that zoo very upset, it appeared he had been locked out of a area as he was pacing up and own and roaring very loud... I don't support circus's the last one, upset me by the way the lions were being prodded with what appeared to be a cattle prod ( electric shock) to get them to jump from one wine barrel to another.
 
Hate to see an animal in a cage, it is imprisonment, to my mind. Prefer to see animals in their natural habitat on an animal reserve, where they can be observed and cared for if trouble arises. And zoos will eventually slowly become obsolete, thank goodness.
