Some Classes of People, Individuals & Businesses are accused of having no Compassion or Understanding of the Poor, Sick, Disadvantaged members of Society.

So Let Me Ask----what do you personally do that shows Compassion & Understanding other than just talking about it?

How many of these threads are you going to post Lon?

My career as a therapissed is my primary effort in reaching out to support others in need of compassion, understanding, etc. What began as a career, evolved into a vocation, which has filled my life with purpose and joy.

Behave Jim :shussh:….oh, I get it Jim, you're using reverse psychology to being "compassionate and understanding"? ha:)

Actually, I think it's a great question for this day and age. And the answer is simple…."Listen". I mean really listen. Don't take calls or texts. Make eye contact. Tell them "I hear what you're saying". Ask questions. But don't start in with "oh the same thing happened to me once" going on and on about oneself.

But don't start in with "oh the same thing happened to me once" going on and on about oneself.

Oh I hate that. So insensitive! It's almost like one upsmanship..."I've had the same problem" or "Well, you think YOU have troubles? Let me tell you about when I..." Spare me.

THAT'S what really ticked me off about a former co-worker, very insecure fellow, smart, good worker, BUT.....Whenever someone, anyone, friend, co-worker, stranger, remarked about a thing he had seen, or done, or any of the thousand possibilities to be told of, old Paul would butt in with, "That ain't nothin'! Wait till I tell you about THIS!"

I grew to hate that. imp

Lon, I do not think it is anything you "do". Rather it is an instinctive thing. Like Shalimar, caring and compassion became a vocation vs a career. Early on I chose to work with the indigent population for this reason. That I blessedly was given this ability and it was my mission to use it. At the end of my day I always thanked the Lord for using my hands and giving me the knowledge to do this.

We shouldn't assume other people;s motives, but I think what Lon is trying to do is make us stop complaining about the non compassion of the super rich and big corporations, unless, we as individuals, spend six months of the year administering to the sick in the Sudan. It doesn't work that way, Lon. We can't save the world as individuals, so we give to charities that (hopefully) will do some good. If occasionally we encounter some neighbor or individual in trouble, and we are in a position to help, we render assistance. We show it by not saying things, like "Get up out of that wheel chair, leave your aged mother in some one else's care, and go earn a six figure salary like everyone else".

Depends on the situation. I don't know how to answer this question.

I donate to many different charities... However what I can do doesn't make a dent.. In fact all the charities combined do not meet the demand there is for help.. SO what else do I do? I make sure that I vote in every single election.. and I vote for the party that wants to make sure our social safety nets stay in place.. so that there will always be a floor through which no one can fall.. even if it means more (God forbid) taxes on the rich.. and even on myself.

I show compassion by helping people whenever I can. I never speak or brag about it but, just this once, I'm going to make an exception. I am a conservative. Some people on this site paint conservatives as greedy, selfish, hard hearted beings who don't care about the sufferings of their fellow man. I feel that I have to speak up in defense of all of us.

Yesterday I heard about a lady who needed money to pay her car insurance. I gave her enough money to pay it for the next six months. Nobody knows about it but her and me.

I am not rich. Far from it. But I can help a few people as I go along. That's what I believe in. And I am a conservative.

I suspect that in terms of $$$$$$. The Super Rich & Corporations kick in more to help the poor and needy than you and I and all other so called Middle Income Folk combined.

I try to be an active listener (instead of a talker), give to worthy causes (although I'm getting ultra suspicious about which agency is worthy, more and more!) and treat anyone I meet with respect and kindness regardless of who they are or how they look. And while I haven't paid anyones car insurance, I'm not above tucking a mystery cashiers check in a mailbox if I think the need is genuine.

Good for you Shirley. I do the same when I can and nobody else knows about it if I can help it.

For anybody else, I just wring my hands and hope they get help from somebody else.

I think that compassion can be shown in small ways. Not just “Oh, those poor people standing in that soup line”, or putting a dollar in a tin cup, or sending a check to a charity, but …

Couple years ago I became aware that someone’s electric was going to be turned off, so I paid the electric bill. (No strings, not a loan) Then I told the person what to do/where to go to get some help to prevent being in that predicament again.

Offer to take kids for a weekend so stressed out parent(s) can take a break.

Things like that can help a lot.

p.s., good for you, Shirley. :)

And therein lies the difference in your own comment: Super Rich (corporations). Hands up everybody if you are super rich.

Hmmmm, my spidey-sense isn't tingling......does that mean we have no super rich here?

Do you remember that story in the Bible about the widow giving her two mites and Jesus said she gave far more than anyone else did?

[h=1]Luke 21:1-4New King James Version (NKJV)[/h][h=3]The Widow’s Two Mites[/h]21 And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, 2 and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. 3 So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; 4 for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God,[a] but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”

I may not be a Christian but there are a few good stories there for us to all take a lesson from I think.

That's a good point jujube, about not giving advice unless it's asked for. I try not to do that as well. They're not necessarily looking for someone to 'fix it' but they do need to unload.

So, what exactly makes you think that? I'm not trying to "be" anything here, just curious.
