How do you unlock an email account?

I got scammed. I got an email saying I had to update my email to 8.1. There was supposedly a link on how to do that. I clicked on that and got a "404" response. But now, my email account is "locked " and I don't receive my email. But I do have access to it. I want to get my email back, anybody know how??
I'm not computer literate, after pressing the 'on' button, my knowledge is a bit fuzzy.
Thanks.

I'm not an expert on these sorts of things, however, if someone got access to your account and changed the password you might not be able to recover it. Who was the account with, Google Gmail, Yahoo, Etc., you may be able to call technical support from the provider and see if they can help you recover it. Either way, start by rebooting your computer but maybe stay off line until you figure this one out.

I don't know if you can still revert a computer to an
earlier date, if you can, then go back to a date before
you got scammed.

Other than that I don't know, get a new Email account,
you can get into your old one, so you can get all of your
contact's addresses and let them know, then you will need
to change the email address in any accounts that you have.

Good luck.

Mike.

That doesn't right and I would just setup another email account with the same company. I have two gmails, two hotmails and a few yahoos, especially if I was scammed. It's also good to have an encrypted email like Proton. I never receive scam email.

My wife got scammed out of her yahoo account. She reached out to her email provider and ultimately had to make a new account. Shop around for a new email provider. Look at their features and costs etc. Choose what suits you.

what just happened seems I want to reply to myself?

as the world seems to get smarter it can get more explosive heh? - yea blow the a/c and start a new different one - I also have proton as mentioned above and it seems very very clean?

Do you use free or paid Proton email accounts? I just looked at Proton on line. "Mail plus" is $3.99/month with 10 email addresses. Not quite as many pluses as Proton Unlimited, which is $9.99/month.

I was wondering why someone get their jollies by messing around with my email  It seems the purpose of a scam is to make money.
My email provider is Metrocast, which doesn't exist as a company anymore. But I found a site which can fix email problems with Metrocast. BUT there was a slight fee- $55 yearly. And my security app was alerting "MALWARE".
After a lot of trial and error, I found that Breezeline, my internet provider, had a Meterocast section in the backroom. So I got my email back.
Thanks, everyone.
