How Far Can a Woman Go to Defend Herself?

If someone is in your house you can legally kill them. But you can’t shoot them in the back as they are running away. Curious Deb what were the circumstances of the case you mentioned.

I really wish that the forum would get rid of the bold type. Often I am typing for a while before I notice and don’t want to erase and start again. It seems to be the default setting. Unless I am doing something wrong.
We each can set or undo Bold type. Most posts and comments are not bold but we sometimes bold a word or phrase for emphasis. So if everything's bold for you it may be a setting on your device.

If you look at top left of the box for typing you will see B I T (Bold, Italics and font size. When the B is black text will not be bold, when blue text (either that you type while its blue or that you highlight then click the B.

We can edit for about a day after typing posts or comments, ad long as the word edit appears at lower left corner. If you notice before that option disappears you can fix it by clickin on the efit button, then touch the text anywhere. When the option box appears (cut copy paste select all) click on select all, then go tap the B, it should change color and your text should lighten.

Once that any other errors you spot are fixed hit blue SAVE button at bottom to have the corrected text posted in place of original.

99.5 percent of people, men and women are not prepared to defend themselves at any one moment. an officer of the law might be in that position but most people are not. we all walk to and from our vehicles whether they be in the drive way, parking lot or next to the curb and we are only thinking of the car and what we are doing at the moment not a sudden assualt....
so lets not all be saying you would do this or that. a man grabs a woman from behind and he will be in total control. someone walk behind you from the store to your car and you think nothing of it and just as you reach your car he shoots you in the head, takes your purse and car. and none of the seniors on this forum is gonna do any defensive tactic!

Why not say what we would do in this or that situation? Of course, no one knows what will happen, how they will actually react in a given situation (especially an emotionally charged, terrifying one), but certainly we can imagine what we'd like to do, what we hope we will do.

Some people do fight back and win; there are videos of it all over Youtube.

I wouldn't want to discourage people from trying to protect or defend themselves and certainly not from even thinking about trying to protect and defend themselves.

About burglary: The run-of-the-mill burglar does his breaking and entering when the homeowner is away(wants nothing to do with homeowners!), and is seldom armed. The home invasion incidents that you hear about in the media are in affluent areas, targeting celebrities known to sport expensive jewelry, or are targeting rival drug gang members.

A tough broad in her fifties might have a chance, but overall, I agree @deaver. The absolute worst thing in my opinion, about getting older is losing that physical power. Doesn't mean one should just roll over, depends on situation, but some folks here are describing movie scenarios, not real life. Worst thing, losing one's physical power. I mourn the loss everyday

I learned a lot of useful tools and tips when my daughter was studying a specific form of jiu jitsu known as senua's rue, which is very self-defense centered. I became close with the sensei there and stayed for a lot of my daughter's classes.

I'm not saying I learned jiu jitsu by proxy, but yes, it's a real thing, not merely a movie thing; people can and do defend themselves. And they should, if they and (not simply their posessions) are threatened.

Okay, at this point I think this has devolved into a facile argument rather than a useful, open discussion. So I'm going to step out here rather than continuing to restate the same opinions ad nauseam.

You have many admirable qualities @Medusa. Your outlook, while I believe is the best response, may not be available in the minds of most people. Takes an attitude adjustment as well as skill. One should be ready, always be ready, for the unpredictable when dealing with the outside. I wear my armor, and I'm always on the lookout.
