I;m not surprised about the Antimaassars ...lace ones do need gentle treatment... but Antimacassars were used when I was a kid really to stop people's hair treatments from marking the furniture on the back of sofas/My father always wore brylcream for example.. and my aunties always had bouffants glued with ''laquer''...
In traditional Spanish and Italian houses where the owners are past 60.... Antimaassars are everywhere still...on everything...
..even today tho' people use them here .. but the name has changed, and instead they're called sofa back overs..or sofa arm covers et al...
