How Late Will You Open the Door at Night?

My wife will say, there's someone coming to the door, go and answer it.
First thing I do is flick the outside light on, ask what they want from behind the closed door. Usually just tell them I'm not interested and they go away. If they are persistent, they better be prepared to stand there and listen to me while I open the door in just my trunks and tee shirt ☺️

I never open my door, day or night. I live in an over 55 apartment complex. It is a "secure entry" but not really. Anyone can walk into the vestibule and someone sitting in the lobby will let them in. 😱

Everyone I'm friendly with knows I do not answer my door at all. They should text or call me before coming over. If I am in either of the bedrooms or bathrooms I cannot hear a knock anyway.

There have not been any incidents in the 2+ years I have been here, but I lived in NYC my whole life before here. I can't change.

Any hour... of course, the 45 ACP will be in my hand, while the wife stands back a bit with the 12 gauge... but yes... any hour.
You don't know how much I envy you for your liberal gun laws.
The 45 ACP is a fine gun, as I know from former fellow marksmen.
I never had the possibility to shoot with one.
With exception of the Czech Republic the gun laws are very strict in European countries.

I never answer front door knocks. I also have a side panel window beside the door and I look first – it’s usually someone holding a clipboard (solicitor or salesperson) so I don’t bother answering. I actually disconnected my front doorbell – what bliss. Only a few people will actually knock – most just use the non-functional bell. If I am expecting a service call, I reconnect the bell just for that visit.

If there’s a knock on your door, how late will you open it?

There are kids going around playing Nicky Nicky Knock Knock. It wasn’t that. They tend to bang hard and do it late at night.

There was a knock on our door at 7:30 pm. My husband was home but busy. Behind the closed door, I asked who it was. A delicate female voice gave me a non-answer and I repeated the question. She said she was there to fund raise. I knew my security cameras were watching her. She left when I said I wasn’t interested and headed off around the neighbourhood. Imo, the only fund raising she was doing was for herself.

Talking to a few others, I realized she only went to houses that didn’t have a side panel window. She really upset one lady who lives alone. Another single woman let her in to use the washroom. Wonder if anything went missing. She got a good scolding from another neighbour.

I’ll open the door in the daytime, since we all live close together. Since we have a doorbell, I’m always suspicious if it’s a knock. There’s an older man who always likes to knock. Maybe he doesn’t trust these new fangled doorbells.
Very stupid woman SMH. Possible deadly consequences, as recently happened here. Stupid, stupid woman.

@squatting dog seriously? Why would you need to answer the door with gun in hand? What happens if you accidentally shoot someone?
Yes seriously. If you are a well trained gun owner... there are no accidental shootings.
Would you just open your door at, say 3am and greet a stranger with open arms? Of course not. Now, what if stranger was trying to kick in your door? You could call the police, but, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't arrive in time. (doors being what they are today).

When seconds count, are not the cops really minutes away? That's not just a bumper sticker slogan, that is truth.

11:30 pm. Two teenagers (brother and sister). Car broke down. I told them to wait on my porch. Called their grandfather and he came and got them.

Midnight. Knock on front door. 12 year old who lived down the road. Her mother had kicked her out, now no one was home, and she couldn't get in. I let her in. She spent weekend with us because that is what the state police said to do! They would not come and get her. Okay. On Friday night, her mother called with a big fat lie of a story. I sent the girl home and called Children's Protective Services. Mom had been reported in the past, but CPS did nothing.

Spent the rest of the week listening to my daughter try to persuade me to foster the girl. That was a huge NO.

At 3 am I don't open the door period. I understand but at the same time I know a lot of people don't have guns and get along ok. Thanks for the response. :)

Are you offering, Bea? 😊
Sure, the ice cream will probably be melted by the time I get there! 😉🤭😂

I will open the door most any time and like many others, I have my 9mm in the other hand behind the door.

Living in a gated community, I very seldom get a late night knock on the door.

Sadly, it's a myth that the police can protect you from real-time harm. At best they can find the criminal...after the fact.

Police agencies can be pro-active and round up crooks, reducing the local crook population does help, in the long run.
