How long to keep ground beef in a fridge?

Bought some on the 5th, today is the 9th....It has lost it's "red" color.....is it safe to eat?

I re-packaged it for easier stowage, 4 patties in a bag, if that makes a difference?
 

It is OK, the best beef has been dead for at least three weeks,
but supermarket meat is turned over quickly.

In future if you are going to use it later, put it in the freezer.

I wouldn't use it.. if any meat changes colour in my fridge even if it's only a day old, I wouldn't trust not getting food poisoning,..better safe that sorry!! Remember ground beef is different to steak for example..in that, having been ground up it has much more opportunity to be contaminated with bacteria...
 

With ground beef & even steaks I immediately freeze whatever I'm not going to use the day I buy it. Usually freeze in serving sized portions & so later on I can either fix one burger or take more than one portion if I'm going to make chili or spaghetti sauce etc. That's just my personal preference.
 
I think we throw a lot of food away that is safe.

With meat like ground beef? Cook it as soon as you get home into patties and then freeze them. It's easy to thaw them out for re use.

The criteria here is how it was wrapped. If no air gets to it the likelihood of contamination is slight.
 
I would probably use it but I would tell you to throw it out.

Give it the sniff test and use your best judgment.

Well, the first thing that caught my eye...was the loss of color, then I sniffed it...didn't like that either.

I have never had beef lose it's color that quickly. I've kept it for 5-6 days & ate it. But this I will toss....today.

I think for beef 'patties' anyway, I'll use Camper's suggestion , grill'em all up at once , & freeze what i don't use the day i buy them.
