How Many Names can You Be Called

I'm a Junior so I'm never called by my first name. That was my father's name. My middle name is Douglas. I've been called Douglas, Doug, Doogie Howser and one I hated... Dugout Doug... by an uncle because I wasn't good at sports. I laugh about it now because he was such an idiot.

My name is Franklin. Most people call me Frank, and that's how I introduce myself.

But nearly everyone in my family calls me Mick or Mickey because that's the nickname my dad gave me when I was just a toddler.

It's weird....my dad named all of us, and then nicknamed all of us when we were real little, except for my oldest brother.
It's the same with my Daughter. Her name was chosen by her father my ex husband I didn't get a say in it.. it's a nice enough name but wouldn't have been my choice, so ever since she was a baby I've called her by a nickname...

I've always wondered how Peggy became a nickname for Margaret.
Over the years, Maggie morphed into Meggie and Meg, likely because of accents changing the vowel sound. That continued to transform into the Peggy and Peg we know today, based simply on a trend of creating nicknames that rhyme. It's the same reason we have Bill from William.
Robert/Bob is intriguing. Google says: Rhyming names were popular in the Middle Ages, so Robert became Rob and also Hob, Dob, Nob and finally Bob.
Tina, as well as being a name in it's own right, there's many a Tina that is a Valentina, Christina, Martina, Justina, Bettina and I once knew a Qistina.

I know this because both my grandmothers were called Margaret, as was 2 aunties... ... and they all got called something other than Margaret... also I was given the name as a middle name

My paternal grandmother who I was closest to, was always called Meg... the others a varition on Peg, Peggy, Margie, Margo.. etc

Friends from present to long ago, call me Janine or nickname Jan,
also including bunches of other ones that they have assigned me.

Janny, Cookie, the list goes on..

Thank you all for replying, but it looks like
most of you are too embarrassed or very
secretive to tell us your name, but you did
at least reply.

Mike.
it's not embarassed , Mike, it's a very real security issue not to give your real name on the internet. On this forum alone there will be literally hundreds of people just reading the forum, and many of those will be scammers, who are garnishing personal information...

If I have upset anybody, I apologise, that wasn't
my intention!

I was not aware that a first name could cause any
scam emails either.

Mike.

Most of my family members and friends from back in the day call me Evelyn, my nickname (or Evie). My grandchildren have different names for me: Bmother, G-Ma and Grandma. My honorary daughter has started calling me Mumsy. Some of my son's friends who have "adopted" me, call me Queen or Queen Mother. After I accepted Islam, I changed my name (except kept my middle name in honor of my birthmother). Since I have a somewhat public persona and wish to remain anonymous, I won't share that first name here, though I do on Facebook. The difference is I don't post anything even remotely as personal as I post here.

My given name is Edward, in my youth I went by Eddie. Now it is either Edward or Ed. Some call me Mr. Ed

Allen, Alan, Allan, Al, take your pick. My first name has been written in all of these ways, and probably a few others.

The real knee-slapper is my last name, but I obviously won't divulge that.

I remember a time when I was about 7 years old when I declared at the dinner table that I was not to be called by my first name. I wanted to be called by my middle name. That lasted for about 2 days.

Like I have said. You don't choose your nickname. Others do. That becomes your brand, so to speak. Nothing wrong with that. Mostly it is endearing and something to be happy with.
