How much should a homemade pie cost at a food sale?

A few weeks ago, I attended a church's holiday bazaar. They also had a food sale. I looked at the pies and they were $14. The last time I looked at pies at a bake sale they were around $4 -$5. I was telling some of the ladies at senior BINGO yesterday about it and they seemed to think $14 was a bargain. They mentioned that they've seen pies as high as $20 to $25 at bake sales. I could get a can of pie filling and a couple of refrigerator crusts for less than $5.

...a can of filling ?...perhaps the others are putting fresh ingredients in their pies...also you've got to add the cost of your gas or electricity to cook them, and your labour time...

I noticed this also. Pies around $20.
 
I was hoping to find a mince pie for T-Day. None of the local store carry them fresh or frozen. So, I thought i'd just get a jar of "None Such" mince pie filling and make my own. Stores don't carry that either, but it's available on line. $24 for a 27 oz jar. Plus shipping. No idea if that would make 1 pie or 2 pies, but don't want one that bad. Pumpkin it is.

I think $14 is a good price for a homemade pie if it's made from scratch. The little bulk food store had their annual fall open house a few weeks ago where other vendors come in. Two Mennonite ladies are always there who make apple dumplings from scratch. I paid $12 for 4 & they were large enough that I cut them in half.

I seen Braswell's 14 oz. mincemeat filling at Meijer's. It was on sale, buy one at $6.99 & get the second 50% off. It would take two for a pie at that size. I wish I would have picked it up when I seen it.

Yes.

My favorite pecan pie is a frozen one I can get at Walmart for $6.98 - or, I can drive 12 miles to this quaint little Amish bakery and pay $16.50 for a pecan pie which is no better. I got one of those awhile back amd donated it to the church bake sale which was raising funds for a cause. Their sale worked like an auction and people bid. Someone bid $15 for it and it was sold for that.
 
I’d expect to pay $15 minimum for a small pie.

When you factor in the ingredients, time, electricity, clean up, and expertise of the cook, that’s a bargain.

My generous friend couldn’t bring herself to charge much for her mincemeat tarts, because they used to cost less. They were beautifully decorated and wrapped and sold out immediately to other helpers at the charity. She didn’t even charge what they cost her for the ingredients. At the end of her baking spree, she’d be exhausted. They charity would have made more if she’d just donated her costs.
 
Granted you don't know about factory food or restaurant food either for that matter but at least they are periodically inspected....we've been given homemade baked goods a few times and after smiling and thanking the person we've just tossed it.

Why ?...years ago about five houses down the street a lady passed and you wouldn't know by just walking by or seeing her on the street but her relatives found out after she was gone that her house was absolutely filthy inside and was infested with cockroaches and mice....you never know, I sure would of hated to have unknowingly eaten something that came out of her kitchen.
 
I was at a public dinner many years ago. Chicken and biscuits were among the dishes. When I looked closely at the biscuits, there were bugs in them. I discreetly told the person overseeing the dinner. I forget whether the dish was removed from the table or not.
After that I keep all food items that aren't canned in the fridge or freezer, especially things like flour and crackers.
