Yesterday while out walking noticed a lot of fire/ police up the street saw a bus and a few cars.......... accidents common as we have kids in souped up cars trying to go too fast....
did not clear as fast as normal ........so i walked up a bit to see if a better view .... nope........ other neighbors did as well most just mad about having to reroute leaving etc not what is happening....
As i walked back i noticed a young lady ... neighborhood is all 55 plus ... carefully working her mask and a hoodie ........ sure she was worried about covid.... NOPE.......looking for packages or open doors as she stopped and looked closely at each porch ....i said hello she left quickly to next street ... hope all those who decided to walk down street locked up
what opportunists criminals are knowing curiosity most likely would leave doors open and masks once again are to hide your face ....

A 55+ is a stupid place for these criminals to go. They must realize many or most are retired and people are home. But I guess they are not smart enough to figure it out.

I'd probably notice this. I'm kind of untrusting.
many in neighborhood still work .............................but I thought about how i think she did it ...................specifically because the opportunity caused by the commotion. More people gawking or whatever and she thought she would go unnoticed....... funny thing is her wearing a mask is what set her apart ... but she was trying to hide her face.....
I am often amused that some criminals actually think about what they are doing.....
..

never did find out why the street was closed for hours i am assuming a fatality .... but local news here is ridiculous spend more time on trying to relate national stories like one guy has a cousin who lives there etc...

Porch pirates love 55+ communities because they know most of the residents are slow, weak, and nap a lot. They can snatch your package and disappear before you can even get to the door.

All these communities need a sign at every entrance saying "All streets have cameras" or whatever.

Not this one .... that is sad if that is true most everywhere else......
recent turnover left most being about 60 / many working/ many out in yards and walking or biking etc when home

They assume that most 55+ residents are slow, weak, and don't have guns. And they're right. In regular neighborhoods, if there's no car in the driveway they assume the people are at work, and they're usually right.

Here's some porch pirates in action.

I didn't consider this angle. I'd think it would be a deterrent but maybe not.

I'm sure some in senior community residents have their own cameras. The nice man across the parking lot (my parking place is in front of his townhouse) got a camera. He said he had a couple packages go missing and his brother had something stolen off his truck. It's a good thing to have these days.

Yes it is. Porch pirates are wise to the cameras, though. They'll cover their faces, park so their license plate can't be seen or ride a bike instead. I've seen videos of them stealing packages while disguised as a pizza delivery person...wearing the t-shirt and cap, carrying an empty pizza box. It's nuts.

That's nuts but I believe it. It's amazing what crooks can come up with. I hate theft.

i think it is nuts how many really dumb things do they get before anything of real value ..... we do not have much delivered but some dog treats and occasional golf balls so i guess they would not be happy taking that....
have seen photos of field north of here that many opened and sorted the loot most ended up abandoned in field

They don't care. They get the gold nuggets at some point.

And they're not looking for stuff they can use, they're looking for any kind of crap they can sell....looking for drug money, that's it.

This is how we caught out Doorstep thief..we have the Video ring doorbell, and altho' we weren't home when he stole the box, we were able to give the police very clear stills from the camera, and the police recognised and knew this guy very well , a local thief, so he was arrested , within 2 months he was in court, we didn't have to attend, he plead guilt, he was fined , and ordered to pay compensation to us.. he never did pay the comp, and he's probably never paid his fine , that was about 3 Christmases ago now...

exactly ... no one ever gets compensated regardless ....

Yeah, these minor inconveniences are totally worth it to these pieces of crap.

yeah they had some folks go clean up items from field and resale on facebook ... meanwhile Amazon had replaced all items
i am surprised that feature has not stopped it has to be expensive....

Amazon now has a policy where they'll stop delivering to an address after more than 3 separate thefts and replacements. They're also considering having places where you go pick up your packages in neighborhoods where theft is a big problem.

fortunately the sender of the item were willing to replace them as soon as we showed them the ring doorbell footage ( and a company which my husband has dealth with for many years and are close friends)... but again as you say, because of that piece of garbage our friendly company were out of pocket too..

Because they cannot be sure it was truly stolen ... it is sad that people still have the mindset they can pretend... get another one and NOT see that is still stealing
they have the lockers but for some they are not happy with that as a friend said people always seem to be lurking there and makes her feel uncomfortable.
