How Often Do You Grocery Shop?

I do my 'big' grocery shopping every 2 weeks. I have a helper who does the driving, loading, and unloading - but I pick out the items myself. (My helper is from our county Dept of Aging Senior Options program. I schedule in advance; there's a small charge and I get a monthly invoice. The service is fantastic. :) ) I've had the same helper for almost a year, but there are plenty of backups just in case. The program is very strict about NOT tipping...no $ is to be exchanged between clients and helpers.

About once a week I pick up a few things myself.

Sounds pretty good; I see you get an invoice every month--I can see that as the driver has to pay for gas. I wonder if our dept. of aging has that. I still haven't registered at the one in my city.

This sounds interesting. Those grocery bags are getting heavier, even tho' I don't have far to go from my parking space to the front door.

NO - the contracting company supplies vehicles AND gas. They bill the County. It's quite a good deal for all concerned.
Okay, then it is a good deal. I didn't know there was a company involved--thought it was a volunteer like our dept. of aging has for various reasons. So then the contracting company has to pay for gas and bill the county for it and therefore you get an invoice.

Yes, but my invoice is so small...you wouldn't believe it. 😀

Many different companies clamor to get these contracts with the County. Taxes also come into play. Drivers/helpers are paid by contract company. They are punctual, polite, and vehicles are clean. My helper pushes my cart for me. If he gets an item for himself I tell him to put it on conveyor belt with my stuff but he won't do it. Guess that's like a tip and not allowed.

Oh... clients must be age 60+ and ambulatory.
And, shopping and other transportation services must be before 6PM.

(btw for quick spur-of-the-moment errands I use Uber.)

Varies for me. I pass the grocery store just about every time I head into town or head for the highway to go anywhere. About 3 mles away, it's convenient, right across the avenue from the pharmacy, and close by the library.

It requires no special effort to stop by when I'm out and about. It becomes a "grocery store" for a major shopping trip or it's a "convenience store" when we need a gallon of milk or loaf of bread.

AC, thank you for that info. I plan to not renew my driver's licence in 3 years when I'm 80 and it will be due for renewal. I am already feeling antsy about losing my independence without a car. I will have to look into my county Dept of Aging Senior Options program to see what is available here.

Since it's only me I shop every 3 weeks or once a month. After shopping I do marathon cooking, staples and trying new recipes, then freeze the portions and it takes me that long to eat it all. I HATE shopping and don't want to pay for home deliveries.
I never minded shopping when I had my car. I always liked to look for bargains but then got something else at full price that was a treat! Wish I had a car :sneaky: There was a time when I only shopped once a month, too, but it was too hard for me to carry all the groceries up sets of stairs here. Sounds like all you cooked would last the month. I used to like cooking but I have to push myself to do it now.

I believe you that it's a good deal whatever the invoice is...;)

Hey, RR, I got my dolly from Amazon, the one I wanted to carry my 40lbs boxes of litter (in another thread). Just tried it yesterday, how great it was, wish I had bought it sooner. I plan to put a bin in it and carry my groceries from the car in my driveway to inside my house that way. It usually takes me 4-5 trips carrying several bags at a time by hand.
