Like I wrote earlier, I am 6’4”. When I joined the Marines out of college, I had to speak with a recruiter who asked me what I thought I wanted to get out of joining the Marines. This was during the Vietnam War and I had just read that the Navy and Marines were looking for pilot recruits, so I told him that I would like to fly. He said that it would be a possibility.
Towards the end of basic and graduation, I was told that I would be too tall, which I found out later was bs. The Sgt. asked me if I was officer material. Long story short, if I would have listened to him when I got to boot camp and followed his advice, I would have been promoted to a 2nd Lt. (O1) because of my college diploma. But, I did not do OTC or any other officer trainings. I really messed up. I was just too lazy.
I wanted to go to the Naval Academy, but again, I couldn’t get anyone to sponsor me and getting in at that time without a sponsor or the recommendation from a Naval Academy graduate was almost impossible, unlike today. It is a process, but it’s well worth it if any young man is accepted.
