How to Freshen a Dishwasher?

Our dishwasher smells musty for some reason. Therefore the plastic stuff I just washed smells funny too. Is there a filter or something and where is it?

I believe there is a freshener you can buy but I don't buy them as they all have that horrible artificial scent I'm allergic to. Mine does have a filter in the bottom that I pull out sometimes. And sometimes I leave the door open all night to make sure it's completely dry (even though I use the dry cycle). I leave the washing machine open all the time so it doesn't smell.

I set a small dishwasher-safe bowl on the top rack (no other dishes) and pour a cup or so of white vinegar in the bowl and then run my dishwasher through a cycle, using the hot water setting. I do this about once a month. I also sprinkle about a cup of baking soda right on the bottom of the washer and do a hot water cycle. I do this about once a month too. I've done this for years. Works great. I use white vinegar for many chores. I buy it by the gallon.

Also you may need to wipe around the seals on the door - they can get to be a bit mouldy. The vinegar in a cup does work well to help freshen it up. Most of all though, you have to locate the filter, take it out and give it a good clean and rinse.

I second the vinegar and baking soda suggestions. I used them to clean just about everything. They disinfect, too.

I don't have a dw but I freshen my microwave with white vinegar.

I don't use it very often. Maybe that's why it doesn't get grody.

By the time I load it with the few utensils I use, run it thru the cycle and then UNload it,

I can wash the things by hand.

Fur, find the make and model on the DW, usually on the inside top of the door, and then go online and look for the owners' manual.

One thing I've found that helps with mustiness is to always leave the DW door open until it is completely dry inside there -- like overnight or something -- like Ameriscot said above. It's the damp that gets them to smelling yucky.

Definitely not!

The delicate aromatics of lime are overpowered by the gin. Definitely needs the more powerful lemon!

On airplanes they always give you a lemon and I much prefer a lime.

Ralphy is a serious gin drinker here. Let's ask him!

I never get a smell and don't use anything for freshener. I wonder if it is because mine is a stainless steel interior? I do clean the filter when I think of it.

My dishwasher smells fine. I don't do anything to freshen either, but when I load I rinse off all the food scraps, and usually have a big load so run it on the longest wash.

Get the Make, Model, and Serial number off your dishwasher....it should all be on a label either on the door frame, or the front inside of the dishwasher frame. Then, go to Appliance Parts Pros web site, and order one...it will probably be only about 5 or 10 dollars. Replacement is usually easy,..the filter should be located near the front/bottom of the dishwasher, and usually just twists in and out.
