I rarely get more than four hours a night. Can anyone suggest anything? I want to avoid prescription medication.

I swear by no caffeine, no sugar, exercise, light dinner, nothing to eat after 7pm, and a diet of non-toxic foods during the day.

Turn off TV and smartphones way before bedtime, especially the news and murder mysteries, etc. Remove your TV from the bedroom.

Create a sleep sanctuary. De-clutter the bedroom, make sure no light seeps into the room...not even a night-lite. Set the thermostat between 55 and 75 degrees. Make sure the AC/Heater is well filtered so allergens aren't in the air. Clean sheets...especially the pillowcases, preferably double pillowcased.

When you lie in bed, consciously relax as you tense and then relax each part of your body

Limit nap time to 15-30 minutes.

If you have any pain, get rid of it. Ibuprofen, aspirin, soak in warm bath of Epson Salts, or whatever it takes.

I got started on sipping about a shot of flavored Vodka, several years ago. I take my "nip" about 9PM, and shortly after 10, my eyes being to droop, and I hit the sack. Rarely do I wake up before 7AM. That is perhaps the best "sleep aid" I've ever found....and that is about the only alcohol I consume, anymore. Most medical studies say that a small amount of alcohol, glass of wine, etc., is good for a person, and so far, I agree.

Furry, here's my :2cents: (likely what it's worth 'cause everyone is probably different.)

Unless you are on a schedule, I think the best thing is to hide the clock, and go to bed only when you're really sleepy at night, even if it means staying up 'til 2am. During the day, if you feel like a nap, for a few days at least, try fighting it. After an hour or so, I always get a second wind. Eventually, if you're lucky you will settle into a pattern that won't alarm the neighbors.

Alleve (generic naproxen sodium) has worked well for me for sharp pain, like toothaches, broken toes, etc.... Look up whatever is in Nyquil and avoid it like the plague. Whatever is in that stuff, wakes me wide awake after 2 hours. Could just be the alcohol.

And finally, don't stress out too much about not getting enough sleep. I think your body will let you know when that happens.

Hope you get it worked out. I know you've been struggling with this for a while. :rose:

I get between 8 and 10 hrs of interrupted sleep. Have to pee, have leg cramps and breathing problems that usually occur after 3 hrs. Sometimes due to body ache from the days activities keep me awake later at night so I just do something until I get droopy. Dad would imagine a black board and everytime something was written there he would erase it.
