How to get cheap groceries

My ex rents a car for a day and then we drive to Germany (I can't drive. I did it with the bus and train, but that was not a great idea, carry bags for an hour walking to the train) We live in Holland, not far from the border. There we buy loads and even with paying the car it's way cheaper. Chicken legs, 3 cost 8,50 in my country. There you get 7 for 7,50. We have to pay meat taxes and sugar taxes and they don't do that there.

I get cheap groceries by shopping the sales, buying in bulk and buying very little meat, poultry and fresh produce. It also helps to know which stores have which items at better prices. I buy mostly frozen vegetables, frozen fish products and turkey burgers, which can last a couple of months. I've gone back to buying Costco's rotisserie chicken. It's huge and friends are in disbelief when I tell them how long it lasts. I can walk to the supermarket I shop at most often. When he gets of work, my son picks up groceries from its sister store (which is bigger) that has items the local one does not. He also picks up groceries from Costco once a month. Sometimes I decide I want to go with him.
