How Will You Deal with the High Price of Gas?

In this mornings' news

Tankers carrying Russian oil, liquified gas and diesel have been sent packing back to the Arctic by British dockers who refused to unload them because of Ukraine as the West waged an energy war with Putin that is costing Britons more every day.

MailOnline has tracked seven ships all turned away from the UK in the past week including several trying to use a loophole meaning they weren't technically covered by sanctions.

Dockers at the Isle of Grain in Kent, Milford Haven in Wales, Ellesmere Port on Merseyside and on the Isle of Orkney all refused to unload the fuel being sold by Putin's Russia to help pay for his invasion.

Instead the ships, some owned by Russian shipping companies and all carrying Russian fossil fuels, were diverted to ports in France, Belgium and Holland to unload. Two tankers are yet to find a port who will have them as the West's sanctions starts to bite.

The EU relies on Russia for approaching half of its gas - much more than the UK - but today declared it would be slashing its use by two-thirds by the end of the year.

The Prime Minister is said to considering using more oil and gas from domestic British sources, especially in the North Sea while his Government is said to be looking at opening up the first new round of exploration licences since 2019.

Two UK fracking sites have been granted a stay of execution, it was reported last night, amid a Tory rebellion over the government’s continued ban. Ministers will reportedly consider using them for future research rather than concrete them up.

Last night Britain joined the US in boycotting oil that is believed to be earning the Kremlin $100billion-a-month and used to help fund the $15billion-a-day invasion of Ukraine. With the price of a barrel of oil now up to around $125 - up $25 in less than a fortnight - it is making even more money for Putin.

Today the RAC Foundation has warned petrol prices could rise to an average of £1.60 a litre this week in the UK and £1.65 soon - but some petrol stations are already charging £1.89 a litre with £2 expected in days. Queues have started forming at cheaper forecourts as experts predicted a rise of 5p per day this week.

Experts believe that the Russian oil, gas and diesel turned away from Britain could still end up in the UK because it could be put on a new ship or pumped under the Channel.

I drove to Costco today which is situated in an industrial town about 10 or so miles from here so I could get cheaper fuel, because everyone is now in a panic here and the news has been reporting huge queues at the pumps..... BP ( British petroleum) tens to be the most expensive here.. and in that town Costco is almost next door to BP, which was showing £1.66 per litre for unleaded.. and £1.70 per litre for Diesel... I got mine at Costco for £1.48 per litre.. still wayyy too expensive.. up around 25 p per litre on this time last year... but a whopping 16 p per litre cheaper than BP...

I filled my tank which cost £33.00 and some change but I already had almost 1/2 a tank... and I filled a gallon can with some extra to store ..but people there were filling loads of Gallon cannisters, one guy in the next lane to me had 9 cans he was filling..

A few things come to mind:
For many years I've combined trips to conserve time and fuel but will be even more mindful about it.

We'll use my hybrid more, and his vehicle (pickup truck) less.

After our few scheduled camping trips this spring/early summer, we'll likely stop camping for a while. Diesel fuel for the other (bigger) pickup is now over $6.00 a gallon and we get only 10 mpg when hauling the 5th wheel.

I don't know where prices are going settle but I'm guessing they're going to go a whole lot higher than they are now.

yes I agree, I almost always combine trips , have done for years, for example if we went out for Sunday lunch to the pub, we'd (much to my husband's consternation)..always get the weekly groceries because the Supermarket was just minutes from the pub .. and then we'd stop off at the garden centre on the way home and get whatever was needed, so it's something I'm used to doing.!

Today I needed to go to a lot of places ( several towns) but I couldn't, due to buying the fresh and frozen food at Costco, I couldn't leave it in the car for long, so I had to do just the jobs in that one town.. albeit that I had to drive from the out of town retail park to the town centre, before driving home..

THis week I have a dental appointment in yet a different town in the opposite direction to where I was today, so I'll wait until then, before I attempt to get other stuff I need.. and then again on Sunday I have to collect my new prescription specs, so I'll combine that with getting the car washed..etc.....

Diesel fuel while not on the average fuel users mind is a serious issue when you consider this.
How much diesel does a truck consume?
Idling a heavy-duty truck consumes about 0.8 gallon of fuel per hour. Even when diesel costs as little as $2.50 a gallon, fuel for one 10-hour rest period will cost $20. Typically, a long-haul truck idles about 1,800 hours per year, using about 1,500 gallons of diesel.

toss in about 6 mpg and 2 300 gallon fuel tanks or 600 gallons @ that $6.00 truckers & trucking companies are going to have to raise prices on everything delivered by trucks.

The government estimates that there are between 300,000 and 500,000 long-haul truckers in America. And according to the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, state governments issue more than 450,000 new commercial driver's licenses every year.May 25, 2021

Precisely and at £1.70 a LITRE here in the uk it doesn't take the brain of Einstein to know we're going to see either some serious shortages of everything, or massive price hikes.

Today in the supermarket I saw 3 hairbands.. the type you use to hold a ponytail.. usually the cost would be around £1 maybe £2... max... but today £8.00 !.... that's just a tiny example..

I also went into the Pound store ( Poundland).. huge empty shelves ... and the stuff that remained was very poor quality...

I just won't buy any. I'm being facetious. I don't have a car. But those I know who do are certainly planning to drive a lot less. Eg: Family members went to the local multi plex theater Sunday rather than drive to the one on the highway that has larger theaters. I would imagine people who go food shopping every week would cut it down to twice, even once a month. And of course there's grouping errands by those in areas that are close together to save time and gas money.

People who still need to go out might want to share a ride. I'm not ready for that or taking public transportation.

If you know and trust friends and family, might work.

Currently, have an emergency food supply, if food is an issue. Notice the issues on the new not having good water is bad, so have a personal filter.

Planning on getting a little garden started.

Also great if you are within walking distance of a supermarket, I am but can not try that, someone I know will do

If you have a scooter that will work.
have one but it needs a battery.
