How would it be possible to live off $800 a month

I'm sure not, wherever that is. But renting one bedroom and only that one bedroom in a 27-bedroom house might be possible. And we do have have them here.

There are many people in various cities/areas who rent clean, safe rooms in decent neighborhoods in regular sized homes (3-4 BR/1 1/2 Ba) for a lot less than $800/mo.
Utilities, kitchen privileges, and use of w/d are usually included.

Not always easy, and not desirable for everyone, but for many it works out fine.

a few options that come to mind....

An acquaintance worked a 40 hr straight shift every other week netting about $800 a month.
He was paid to sleep that entire weekend and would brag about all of the rest he'd get in that comfy bed. He was hardly, if ever, woken up and slept 8 hrs.
He would oversee a 20 year old downs syndrome boy in a supportive living program.

The rest of the time he shared a position with 2 other RVers as a Campground host for the Forest Service. He chose his campsight wisely. They had no campground house for 5-6 years, it was adjacent the river and less busy than the others. 10 min from the gym where he worked out and showered. Took no $$, basically only talked. Didn't even clean the bathrooms, nothing. They allowed him to stay all year though his commitment was - May-Oct. His Camp-spot was a little crowded ,not to bad b/c it was so shaded. he shared the position with another Rver. They are not expected to be present 24/7, and can hold outside jobs. All they do is talk and be around in case of emergencies

Every other weekend, he works a 40 hr shift staying with a developmentally disabled adult. He is paid to sleep. 7 or more hours a night of rest, paid to sleep while on call.
Get the guy up in the morning for program.

Otherwise you are pretty much looking at getting on a list for susidized housing where you pay a set 30% of your rent and your utilities, or some, are free

It is not only possible to live on $800/month but it can be done so quite easily. There are thousands of "special" low income apartment complexes designed exclusively for the elderly. Until my mom passed away a few years ago, she was paying $190/month for a 1 bedroom apt, in her senior complex. She also had a food stamp allowance. That left her with aprox $400 of disposable income.

Not saying she was living the high-life but she got along just fine. Every day there was a small senior bus that took the seniors to the mall, where they could shop or go to the movies. 2 or 3 times /week the seniors got together for a pot luck dinner, and there were other activities such as low cost bingo. Any left-over proceeds were used to keep the coffee urn full and ready to go.

I have already suggested in another thread to moving to another country or U.S. possession where your funds are worth more than living in the U.S.

I know people who have gone to Portugal and even Panama.
