How's it go? You do the Pokie Hokie

The guy who wrote the Hokey Pokey song died a few years ago. It took the undertakers several hours to get him in the coffin and ready for the funeral. They'd put his left leg in and he'd put it back out, they'd put his right leg in and he'd put it back out......and then he kept turning himself around. It finally had to be a closed-casket funeral.

OK, I'll stop now.

Seventh and Eighth Grade Friday night dances at the Florence Community Center. 1956-1957. The last dance of the night was the Hokie-Pokie where everyone got out on the floor in a big circle together. Put hands on the shoulders of the person in front of you and went through the motions to the words. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson hosted the dances. What a great couple they were.

"You put your left foot in; you put your left foot out; you put your left foot in and shake it all about."

Four years later when I was at Air Force basic training, we went on a night march that took us into a fog filled valley with tear gas. We had our gas masks on and hands on the shoulders of the trainee in front of us. Someone began singing the Hokie-Pokie and we all joined in although all the words were muffled by our masks. TI's (Training Instructors) picked up on the rhythm and did we ever get chewed out for that one. Bet they got a good laugh out of it behind our backs...

Thanks for the memories, Bretrick.

I have a story about this, too. :giggle: Many years ago, we were vacationing at Ocean City, Md. There was an Oktoberfest celebration so of course I needed to be part of it. As we got closer to the building, I heard there was a group on stage singing Hokey Pokey. As we went through the door, they were doing "you put your right hiney in, you put your left hiney in...." My very young daughter at the time looked shocked and said loud enough for people to hear and giggle "Mom did they say HINEY?!" šŸ’ƒšŸ•ŗ

I think the whole verse went like this

You put your left foot in you take your left foot out you do the hokie pokie and you shake yourself about, that's what it's all about. You put your your right foot in you take your right foot out you do the hokie pokie and you shake yourself about that's what it's all about, .If there is more to it I can't recall. I think you do hand first though lol lol. Thanks for reminding us all how much fun we had as kids.
