Hulu Without Ads

Changed from a Kindle Firestick to a ROKU a month ago for our 10+ YO Sony (which is still going strong). More choices and better control over subscriptions. Decided on 'basic' Hulu for binge watching. I signed for $6.99 but now after a month of watching ads repeating over & over decided that for an extra $6 I would go ad free. Life is too short to waste on them.

I have my DSL ISP, Prime (for shipping), NetFlix & Hulu - totals just over $85 a month, it's better than the old $175 I was paying for Xfinity's bundle+ (probably over $200 now). Was going to watch 'Yellowstone ' but not too impressed with the prequel (1883) & have lost my desire to watch Kevin Costner, his luster went with 'The Body Guard', 'Waterworld' & 'The Postman'.

Your got that right: "Life is too short to watch ads." That is why I cut the cable 22 years ago. I buy DVDs from Amazon and enjoy all my shows add free. I too have ROKU but don't watch too much of it. I do borrow 5 movies/month from the library via Kanopy and Hoopla but keep away from the free stuff due to ads. Someone recently said that it's getting to the point where the TV shows are getting in the way of the adds.
 

Canceled my Hulu as the price went up!! I now use my son's Hulu,my Grandson's Netflix and my daughter's Disney..The only one I pay for is Discovery+ and I share that with another son..Its great having a big family LOL..
 
Latest report on my binge streaming, have now watched 3 seasons of 'Justified', the ads were killing me. Great watching without, never spent $6 monthly better. Also watching 'Big Sky' a C.J. Box authored series, one of my wife's favorite writers. Hope his Joe Pickett series gets streaming time.

Speaking of ads, when stationed in Germany in the 60's. Their stations would play the ads prior to the programmed viewing. Get them over with all at once, idea had merit for the viewers. Don't know if it still is their policy, maybe the US would adopt it.

one note on Roku and Amazon Firesticks...

Both of them seriously overheated on us. We had to stop using them.

First, I thought it was just Roku. I tried Firestick...same thing.

Now, it could be that our TV was just not good enough. It was cheap. I think it maybe cost $150.

I don't doubt that a better TV or maybe a better electrical system in the house might do better.

But, I did Google it...and yes, many people have that problem, that they seriously overheat.


If you have Roku or Firestick, I strongly advise you at least check out if it is generating too much heat. Not just in the sense of how it functions, but, you know, in the sense of how close it is to a flammable drape...and basic home safety issues, re fire.

These things got VERY VERY HOT!!!

many of these articles focus on solutions. I think there are other articles which suggest erring on the side of caution and not using a device that overheats.
 
Re streaming services.

A lot of these streaming services allow you to go month to month.

So, what we have been doing is watching one for a few months, then dropping it and switching to another.


That way, you can grab some great content and when that starts to dry up, just switch to something else.

We had BritBox and Acorn, which were both great. But then we dropped those and picked up Disney, for some shows my wife liked.
 
I set up an Android tv box with Kodi and The Oath addon for my friend to use with her smart tv.
It gets almost all the good movies for free, including current ones that have come out quite recently.
Kodi is free, the addons are free, and the movies are free. The only cost was $40 for the tv box on Ebay.

I also have Kodi on my Linux computers, but need to upgrade the OS to keep getting the latest version.

We simply use the Dish remote to flip to other fav channels when a commercial comes on...its fun seeing which stations have the commercials sinked and which ones don't.
Hardly ever watch a commercial that way...except when we're waiting for the weather to come on!

Sometimes we watch 2 or 3 show series at the same time...lol.

I have the Hulu + LiveTV for $77 something I think. I don't mind the ads.
