I almost cried...

I almost cried - at the thought of all that beer going to waste.
Fifty million pints - give or take.

That's the amount of beer expected to go unused in barrels if pubs remain closed into the summer because of coronavirus. Publicans are currently unable to sell their lagers, ales and ciders - save for takeaways and home deliveries.

"It's a very sad waste of all the work and talent that goes into producing great beer," says Tom Stainer, chief executive of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra). "People won't get to drink it and all those resources have been used up for nothing."

They could give it away rather than throw it away. During the Great Depression they plowed apples and crops under rather than give the food away to starving people. What a waste.

That's the beauty of the internet. Until you posted that I didn't know beer was only sold in pubs. Here if I want beer or a bottle of Jameson triple distilled Irish whiskey I can get either at a market of liquor store.

There are alternative uses for beer like fertilizing plants. Are there any agra businesses that could use that beer

I'm just wondering , couldn't they just Can it ..the brewers I mean, and sell it as they do canned beer anyway ?

Oh no I just realised , you mean the stuff that's already sitting in the cellars of pubs... ... they could distil it all , get the alcohol out of it and use the alcohol for sanitiser , that would allow it to be useful at least for something

What gave you that impression? Of course you can buy beer just about anywhere, but you can only drink it in pubs, restaurants etc.. which are licensed for it be be consumed on the premises. We are talking about draught beer which has a relatively short shelf life.

Hollydolly, my "local" brewery, Brewdog, is already brewing / converting alcohol for use as sanitiser.

My son works for a company that makes sanitizer and he said they‘ve sold out everything and can’t make more because they buy the ingredients from china and China is selling to bigger companies. 😂. I am going to ask him about the beer thing. Thanks

My daughter works for a local Vodka Distiller and they switched over to make sanitizer..

No mention of other sources or that you were limiting beer to draft for the sale . Since you mentioned Fifty million pints as quantity, maybe the source of that info would have been more informational.

Or possibly the makers could get a little more innovative like this business.

Popular San Antonio pizza spot Big Lou's is selling beer by the keg

A real beer drinker would make sure the beer wasn't wasted.
