First off, I will take FULL responsibility for making a very foolish mistake.
When I was on my profile page, I clicked onto the spot where it said it would enable
me to 'read my messages from this site' more efficiently... SO...
I END UP WITH THE ASK TOOLBAR. ASK is as good as a virus because it is almost
impossible to get rid of. Now this is what I do wish.
I wish this site would not allow this 'opportunity' to present itself like it is part of this Senior Forum site. I really feel stupid and foolish for falling for this.
As I said, its my fault because I did not follow my intuition...so, yes, that makes it 100% my fault ... but still
the way this was presented made it seem that it was just part of this site.
Even though I 'removed' it from Programs and Features...it does NOT actually remove but stays there to work as a catalyst for future junk.
 
Go into your control panel Betty, and then into Programs, the the Ask toolbar should be at the top, uninstall it and then restart your computer. Those ads help the owners of this site make a little money, on a free service they are providing us. It's true, we all have to learn to be sure of what we are clicking on before we click. I've been there too;)

If you need "step by step" I can do that for you as well, or you can Google it too. If you need help, there is always someone here that will help;)

Sorry I missed your last line there Betty, did you restart? Because until you restart, all components of Ask will not be deleted. If you think there is anything further, you can use Malware bytes or Super Anti spyware, those two I know about, and they do a good job for me anyway.
 
If you are sure you were on profile page when you clicked the Ask thing, it's not presented by this forum, you should check your system for suspicious adware.
 
Whenever I run into a problem like that, I use the "system restore" to solve the problem..
It puts your computer back to the point just before you downloaded something you don't want or can't get rid of ..........

Sorry this happened to you Bettyann, I can relate because something happened to me recently when trying to install adobe acrobat, some spam programs came along with it and interfered in the whole process, but I was able to uninstall. :bashcomp: Like Nwlady suggested, shut down afterwards and restart the computer. Hope things are back to normal with your computer.

Like Matrix said, if you were on your profile page, then it wasn't an ad from the forum, as there are no ads on our profile pages, so it wouldn't be forum related in that case.

I always have the advertising shut off, so I don't see it, as Matrix described...but just for the halibut I turned it back on to see about the ads. I only get one ad at the bottom of each page of threads on the forum, and none at all on my profile page.

I could have been wrong (nothing brand new to me :) ) about being on the profile page. I had been on the page with a notice that I had received a message....anyway...its in the past now.
Removing anything related to "ASK" is not as simple as it seems because it stays in your system...kind of like 'undercover' and is NOT totally Uninstalled even though it appears to be gone from your Programs and Features... and this is what I am most concerned about. It really is a sneaky Bad News download...It is sponsored by both Google and Firefox and is an 'information gatherer' ... unbeknownst to the computer user. I feel badly because it is the computer I am using while mine is in the shop...but...we will deal with any problems that come up if and when they do.... It will all be ok... "It all works out in the end...and if it hasn't worked out yet, then its not the end" ... That great quote from The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Such a marvelous movie.
