I am receiving messages Windows 10 support will cease in October.

I got the same message. I have the same questions as you.

I was thinking maybe I'll need to install a antivirus program.
II do have an antivirus installed.
I asked on another site and the response was to go to settings to see if my device is compatible.
I did that and got about 4000 word instruction.
I am going to take my laptop to a computer geek I have used before and get an instant answer.
If not compatible I will most likely by a refurbished laptop

I may go to my computer geek, too, to see what I can do now. I always get refurbished computers. The price is always good where I go. I am going to wait to call him though because I have to save money right now.

You can keep using Windows 10. It won't get security updates, so yes you must be more cautious about installing random stuff.

You may or may not get ongoing updates to Defender, but you could use 3rd party anti-malware tools as long as they keep updating their product.

But aside from that you'd have to upgrade to Windows 11 if your hardware is supported... or buy a new PC that is supported and trash the existing PC.

Or shoot yourself in the head by installing something from the rocky shifting sands of Linux. Then get used to things being upside down and hope any hardware you have and software you own will run, or run uncrippled. Hardware drivers are a notorious headache as is application support.

don;t worry micro wanna keep you in the loop and will keep pestering you for ever more!
