I dislike mobile (cell) phones

I have a basic phone, which I carry with me only when I am driving in case I have a problem with my car. It is never switched on, I have no wish for people to contact me when I am out. I just cannot understand why so many people seem to spend so much time on the things.
 

I agree with you. I have one because my husband made me use it. Often I would forget to carry it. I use it mainly for taking pictures I want to add to my computer. Or sending a text
 
I have the latest Iphone... I only use it for texting and taking photos.... . I'd be quite happy with a basic phone, if the cameras were as good as the Iphone,

I've never been a big phone user... ..My next door neighbour sits out in her garden from morning until night talking on her phone... hardly more than 1/2 an hour in the day when she's not on it..!! Who do these people feel they have to speak to all day every day.?

I've often felt sorry for the recipient of the calls from people who can't seen to walk more than 50 feet outdoors without calling someone... I'd be really irritated if someone called me, just to keep them company while they walked to the store etc..
 

They are a great convenience, to have the facility
to contact somebody or to get a call wherever you
are in the World.

When I was young, I had to find a "Phone Box", you
in America call them "Pay Phones" I believe, when I
found one I had to crank a handle then tell the young
lady who answered, the number I wanted, the person
that I was calling had to know when to go to another
"Phone Box" near their home as very few people had
a phone in the home, then answer my call, all very
bad especially on a cold snowy evening.

Well I'm not old enough to have cranked handles in phone boxes to make a call, but I've seen pictures of those old ones...

These were the payphones I grew up with...

of course there was one every few hundred yards so it wasn't too bad...


is this the one you had in the in the 50's and 60's Mike?

This is the one that came after the crank type when
they fitted phones with a dial, the buttons are A to
pay for the call and B to get your money back, the
slots for coins are on the top.

If people need to speak to me they can phone me on my landline when I am at home, have no wish to be contacted by anyone when I am out, not even my husband or family.
 
Since the cost for a cell phone where I live is the same as a land line then why not get the cell phone.

There are many features on it which I just love. As far as people contacting me, I can switch off the call feature anytime. I have a feature called Do Not Disturb.

It's very handy for emergency services if you have a problem with your vehicle. You can't do that with a landline.

I do crossword puzzles on it when I'm on a long boring bus ride. I can message my friend or send an e mail.

I also can block spam calls and the only ones that can call me are those on my contact list.

As far as pay phones where you drop coins in, they have practically disappeared here except for some public buildings. The outside pay booths are gone.

As I said I carry my basic phone with me when I am using my car.

We're with you, mostly. We have a $20 flip phone. We did get it for general travel, and carry it whenever we go out in the car as an emergency backup.It has, on several occasions, proved useful such as keeping up with family members who have some type of emergency while we're traveling.
The whole thing comes down to lifestyle. We use email for most communications, and that works. But we don't have kids or family members we 'constantly' need to be in contact with. Some people do. I have a problem with the now 'pandemic' of a world staring at their phone constantly. Not communicating, just playing games, texting (that's not communicating), selfies, etc. It's become an appendage for so many people.
 
I cannot be without my cell phone, the latest model, at this point in my working life: Trees don't give notice, to all but us experts, when they're about to fail. I also want to be contacted by family, if there's an emergency. I get too many junk calls, now, because my number is posted, online, but once I'm done with the trees, I will get a new phone, with all of the bells and whistles, and nobody will have my number except my immediate family.
 
We have a basic LG phone....$20 from Walmart...and I keep a subscription with Tracfone....$7 per month. We carry it when away from the house, in case of car trouble, or one of the kids needs to call, We get 100 minutes a month, and have well over 3,000 minutes carried over. Cell phones are almost a necessity anymore, but I cannot understand the need to spend hundreds of dollars for a Smart phone, and $100/mo., or more, for a subscription. It seems to me that those who spend half their waking hours yakking and texting are missing out on more important things in life.

If there is a family emergency there is nothing I can do about it until I get home, so I would sooner not know about it whilst I am out.
 
Phones are an interesting guide to when something is taking place. If you're watching a movie and wondering what decade it's supposed to be, all you've got to do is look at the phones they are using. I think the phones are more of a dead giveaway than cars or clothing fashions!
 
Advice I learned the hard way to folks who just carry the basic phone in case if emergency : test it in the locations you go to most frequently & make sure it stays charged! About 4 or 5 years ago that what I had & wasn't aware ofthe possibility of 'dead spots' until my car broke down when I was in one, right in the city & I had to hike to a grocery store to call a tow truck.
The next day I went & got what I consider to be the best phone & the best service. (for me, anyway) I like it & I'm not a slave to it. No more trouble with dead spots in the city & I don't drive out of town any more.
 
I have never been to the UK. I have heard they drive on the wrong side but I never imagined in my life that they would also
dial their phones backwards!!
 
Around here in massachusetts and probably in the rest of the country as well smart phones are really a big problem, especially for kids. The people hardly even notice anything else around them except their phones. Thats all they do is stare into them no matter where they are. They go down the stairs, cross the street, and so many drive their cars while looking into their phones. Its pretty much the same with the kids, its like thats all they know. It also a big problem in schools. They are allowed to take them to school. Those phones are connected to the internet and all the dangers associated with it. But this is allowed by the parents and so they can have them and unfortunatly not just to call home. These phones are nothing but trouble if they are abused like this.
 
Same here Garydavid,... no-one looks to see what's coming when they cross the road, anymore!! Too engrossed in their phones. It breaks my heart more tho' to see children walking by the side of their parents, and the parents on their phones the whole time, no interaction with the child at all..

I never walk and talk... if I have to make or take a call when I'm out, I always stop and stand out of the way in a doorway or something and take the call, then put the phone away..I don't even carry it in my hand..

To so many people the phone seems to be an appendage that's rendered one hand useless... !! trying to struggle holding a phone, and carrying things at the same time... just put the phone away!!
 
I had to pull a lad back as he was crossing the road whilst using his phone, he hadn't noticed the car which nearly ran him down. I get really annoyed when I see parents paying more attention to their phones than their young children when they are walking along road.

I see that too GD. I like a cell phone for emergencies but these days people are glued to a device like they cannot bear to be offline for 5 mins. It seems hectic and ridiculous to me.

Kind of spooky. They remind me of robots.
