I guess I am a W.O.O.T.

But Diva, You haven't seen me hobbling about with my cane!!
No I haven't Dave..but I remember hobbling around on one when I was in my late 30's. My calf felt like it was about to fall off after hearing my knee pop one day when I was coming up from the laundry room (outside & down a flight of cement steps). It hurt so bad, I had to call for my son to come help me (laundry room is right beneath our apartment). When I got upstairs I cried to him "I want my mommy!". An appointment was made and my mother took me to an orthopedic specialist who's demeanor was so nasty, I walked out of his office. I didn't see anyone else for a long time but until my knee felt better...I put heat on it, even while at work and had to use a cane. I was doing field work at the time too and sometimes had to make it up steps. So I know the feeling and it's not a good one at all. It is more unusual to see a young person using a cane, so I may have been a bit self conscious.

Decades later, I saw two very nice ortho guys in the same practice. I was having only minor problems with me knee then but Xrays showed I have two healed, torn meniscuses, likely from a car accident when I was 18 and my knees hit the dashboard. That's another story for another time. But I was told by the ortho specialist in the practice that I'd need a knee replacement. That was over 10 years ago and I haven't needed one yet. I also haven't had to use a cane in a very long time.

Orthopedic surgeons earn their money with surgery. In most cases they'll advise it. Two decades ago a surgeon recommended me to get surgery due to my meniscus. I did not and can walk 10 miles without any problem even now.
