I had an unrequested icon put on my desktop

It had the Firefox logo, but on a black background. The name of the file is g-ak_YnX.htm.

Being the dubious sort, I was suspicious and sent it to the recycle bin, but was curious what is is.

If your default browser is Firefox that is why it had a Firefox logo because it is an htm file. That means it is a Hypertext Markup Language file, the type of file used for the internet and your browser would open it. If you did not put a shortcut to a webpage on your desktop I would be suspicious. Have you ran an updated virus/malware scan? If not you want to do that. Also be sure your OS is completely up to date.
