I had another fall and was quite shaken

A couple weeks ago my hip was aching terribly. I hadn't had that much pain since I had a kidney stone in the early 2000s. I went out on a rare trip to Walmart, and had trouble walking about. I sat on the walker in the store a few times.

I took a taxi home. I got out of the taxi, and stepped on the sidewalk. Suddenly my hip and knee gave out. I yelled Oh S**t, and fell down. Four people jumped to help me back up. I didn't really hurt myself. But I was shaken really bad. I hid out in my apartment for a few days.

The hip isn't bothering me any more. But I made some changes. I decided to use the medical services available in my building. I will also get rid of Humana and find a better insurance provider. I am also using an emergency help button.

It's terrible when you have a fall. I had one in January this year and my knee became quite swollen. Thank goodness it didn't take long to get better. My friend's sister was going on the light rail, here in Sydney, when suddenly she lost her footing and ended up breaking her right wrist and left elbow. It will take her a long time to get better.

Sorry to hear this @ronk , Thank goodness there were people to help you up! I can imagine how shaken you were.

Glad your hip feels better now. Hey, find another insurance before you dump Humana.
Does your state offer Medicaid?

Wish you well.

It can shake your self confidence very badly when you suddenly and unexpectedly fall. There was a period early this year when I fell several times on my daily walk. I eventually figured out that it was due to the extended Covid pandemic that lasted 3 years. All that time I had been sitting around not vigorously walking as per usual. I went into YouTube and watched some videos about how and what to strengthen with exercises and walking. I do the exercises daily, and now my walking has greatly improved with no falling. Though I am now much more careful where I walk. There is a very big physical diference between being 71 and 75 as I am now, I've learned. Good to be aware and cautious.

Those commercials where an elderly lady is yelling, "I've fallen, and I can't get up", used to crack me up. Till I fell and I couldn't get up. Now, I have land lines in every room including the bath. I have an iPhone with me all the time. I used to have a flip phone. When I was going to toss it, I found out it still will make 911 calls, even though it's no longer connected to a service. So, that's near my bed-in case. If you're elderly, and you break a hip, it's pretty much assured you're going to get pneumonia, and that's what takes your life.

Thanks for sharing your situation with us and how you managed it, @fuzzybuddy ! This is good to know about the flip phone! I only have one landline on the first floor and I hardly use the cell phone. This thread is making me think on how to better prepare for a fall, instead of waiting until it happens.

Thanks, everyone for your responses and insights. I am fortunate that I am still relatively tough. In my younger years I exercised a lot. Now all my muscles are somewhat flabby.
It’s never too late to get back to working out! I go to Planet Fitness and there are several people there who use walkers! Find a gym that has a trainer and weight machines who can show you how to use them correctly.

As you look for a new insurance, find one that has Silver Sneakers and a lot of gym memberships will be free, Planet Fitness is one.

I’m a 67 year old female and overweight, but very strong and it does make a world of difference. I have arthritis and still hurt, but having strong muscles helps compensate.

I hope you feel better!

I have two fold up walkers in the house, one for the bedroom, one for the living room. I have these just for preventing a fall. When I go out shopping I take one in the car, use it to go inside store, fold it up, put it in the grocery cart and use the grocery cart as my walker, reverse every thing, when I come out to the car. Works like a charm, fold Up walkers are not that expensive. Gives me a sense of comfort.
PREVENTION is the best approach!

Not only pneumonia but sepsis. That's what happened to my mother when she died :(

I hear you. Falling is my biggest fear these days. I always have my "I've fallen and I can't get up" button near by. Hope you are feeling OK today
