I hate those %@**7!)# grocery selfcheck out machines.

That’s all I want to use now in spite of some stores having selected poorer quality systems.

The last time we went to one store, I suggested to DH that we should use a cashier for our few items. Not only ours but other machines were locking up and lights flashing. This is the norm for this store. I think I’ve finally convinced him. I sure feel sorry for the attendant in that area and make sure to mention that I feel bad for them. A decent manager would be down there helping them.

In non-grocery stores, it’s much easier to go through self-checkout.
 

Well of course I’m going to be the oddball here. Surprise.

I lOVE self check outs. It’s about time they offered them as an option. I’ve never been to a store that only uses self check outs.

When I first used them, I found them somewhat annoying but once I got used to it, they were/are great.

Ask an assistant to show you how to do the steps. If you get stuck, ask for assistant. Assistants should be there to help everyone and anyone.
 
In reality, I hope we will one day get back to much smaller stores. I can't think of any moment when I'd enjoy being in those big, cavernous, fluorescent lit holes again. They're like big cattle corals. Give me as corner store any day of the week. I'll gladly pay a little more.
 
Stopped by the Costco on my home to grab some Chicken Salad w/ Cranberries that the wife likes.
Only had 6 items, so got in the 'self-checkout' lane.
Wasn't really self-checkout, as a person grab one of those price guns, scanned the items and I was out the door.

Being a bulk type store, we always waited till we needed many items before going there.

Now I'll drop by for only a few items from now on.

Not when an I phone can record everything said, as it is being said. News reporters don't use notebooks and pens any more, neither do court reporters. Long gone are the days when the proceedings of the Canadian Parliament were recorded by the Hansard clerks who sat in front of the Speaker's chair and wrote shorthand transcripts that would be printed and bound into the next day's edition of the Hansard Report. JimB.
 
Since I usually grocery shop weekdays at 8-10AM, the regular lines are not bad. If long lines, I do self checkout, with the same annoyances as Fuzzy. The Costco self checkout is much better, don't mind that one at all.

Yes...Costco is one place you will not stand in line long.....they have 'checkout' down pat.
I don't like self checkout at Walmart at all...so I'll just stand in a line for a person...thank you very much.

How do you feel about using an ATM, versus going into your bank branch in person, and getting cash from the human behind the counter ? Think about that, for a minute. JimB.

I love self checkout. It's fun. As I enter each item, I check the price and compare it with my memory of the price. It's exercise for my three brain cells.
 
When I need quite a few things I order online and pickup the order. I've been mostly satisfied with letting someone else do the shopping and bring it out to me.

When I only need a few things I go to the smallest supermarket near me and get there about 7:30 am. No crowds, no lines at the self-checkout at that time and I usually have a nice chat with the employee tasked with helping. Once in awhile I manage to jam the machine but usually it's pretty smooth. Produce is the only part that I sometimes feel a little unsure about.

At my store, at self checkout, the clerks always ask if I'd like them to checkout for me. I always say nope.

so far we do not have self checkout at Costco..thank God.. because the checkout staff are much faster than anyone could be checking themselves out...at least at our Costco

I don't use them anymore either but not because prices are high and I feel like they owe me. I do it because that's employment for someone they are taking away. Hire more people.

It's not progress though. It's cutting back on staff to increase corporate profits. If we all banded together and simply refused to use self checkout they would have to hire more people and open more lines. It's just common sense. They would go broke otherwise. So this one is entirely on us and only we can change it.

I wasn't a court reporter, but I was a Scopist (a person who transcribes the reporters steno). There's a lot of reasons why a court reporter's job will never be replaced by technology. I cut and pasted this from a website:

"High-tech voice recordings and voice recognition never cease to amaze, but what they cannot do includes all the following:
  • Accurately distinguish one speaker from another when more than one person is speaking at the same time
  • Prevent more than one person from speaking at the same time
  • Interpret a heavy accent or what an individual is saying through tears, laughter, or any other emotion
  • Pickup soft, barely audible voices
  • Eliminate background noise
  • Clarify technical terms as necessary
  • Stop and request clarification in relation to ambiguities or other transcript concerns
  • Immediately read back a specific portion of a transcript upon request

This is all in a day’s work for court reporters but is lost on technology, and all too often, technology’s failings are discovered far too late to be rectified, which can jeopardize your entire case. As such, there is little chance that technology will replace court reporters anytime soon."
