I have an umbilical hernia that has gotten worse.

I have been living with an umbilical hernia for about 3 years. I almost had surgery on it but opted out about a year and a half ago. Just recently it has gotten to the point when it pops out I have sharp pains so I push it back in ( about 3/8" ). The past few days it will not stay in, so I am using a hernia belt with a nipple to keep it from popping out. I am about 10 pounds over the weight I would like to be, so I am going to fast for about 18 hours, and exercise . After I loose weight and build up my abdominal muscles I am hoping it will stay in by itself. That's where I am at with it now. Chime in if you have had any experience with this problem or know someone who has. Thanx.

I would love to, BUT it is not a permanent fix even with surgery. You have better odds that it will stay in place, but it varies with each case. Also, like any surgery, the prep is a nightmare, and the Doc says your going to feel like you got punched in the stomach....hard. The recovery takes a few months too. That is what is holding me back.

The mesh type of repair is permanent. Sometimes you have to go back for an adjustment, but most patients don't. If you follow the aftercare instructions to the letter you'll recover in 5 or 6 weeks. You still have to take it easy for a few more months, and keep following the doctor's advice, but that's not a big deal. It's worth it.

I had orthoscopic hernia surgery back in the late '90s and haven't had any problems since. Like @Murrmurr mentioned, the surgeon inserted a mesh and then stapled it in place. I had the surgery in the morning and was released early in the afternoon. From what I remember, I had the surgery on a Friday and was back at work on Monday. Or maybe I took the week off. I'm not sure. :ROFLMAO:

That took a bite out of my fear...Thanks. You too @Murrmurr

It isn't gonna get any smaller, Dennis. My neighbor has one the size of her head, no exaggeration.

I had one similar to yours repaired (mesh) in the early '90s. I don't recall it being any big deal. Very short recovery.

I do recall speaking with a friend at the time who had had one. He told me to get it fixed asap. His was small too but had become strangulated and it took some serious surgery to make things right.

Git 'er done!

Not something to mess with.

I had to rush my wife to the hospital when her hernia got worse.

She got the mesh.

A bit of a slow recovery, but so worth it.

I had an umbilical hernia, got it fixed, it’s stayed fixed and I was very overweight at the time. It didn’t feel like I had been “punch in the stomach”. Felt like I had surgery. But if the part of your bowel that keeps pushing out dies, you will will worst than a “punch in the stomach”, and you could die.

I also had that happen. A part of my bowel died (not In reference to the hernia) and the pain was incredible. The doctor said if I didn’t get surgery within 6 weeks I would die. This is nothing to keep messing about with; my suggest get surgery or don’t. It’s your life, you choose.

had to have surgery,i was stubborn and waited to long.it got strangulated ,awful pain.went back to work 2 weeks later.dont wait if you have pain.

Don't know about an umbilical hernia, but I had a large inguinal hernia 11 years ago. It was repaired with a mesh attached using open surgery and local anaesthetic. No big deal at all. A tad painful for a week, but back to normal in a month. There are definite advantages in using a local anaesthetic, but 'keyhole' surgery with a general anaesthetic usually heals quicker.

They do not get better on their own. GET IT FIXED.

As has been said it is not something to play with, your life could be at risk. My daughter when she was 2 years, had the operation , (apparently the hernia happened during childbirth.) A specialist bound it in heavy bandaging for some months but it didn't help at all, so an operation was advised by the surgeon of the time, I am very pleased I agreed to it.
