I have COPD

I know I need oxygen (my oxygen % goes as low as 73) but I know nothing about the steps I need to take to get a concentrator in my home. I wonder if any of you use oxygen and what kind of equipment you find works best for you? I do know I will need a prescription.

I have COPD Emphysema, but I am not to the stage of oxygen yet. I do not take any prescriptions for it!! Unfortunately I am still smoking but have cut back to 10% of what I used to smoke. I just cannot quit no matter how hard I try.

Ken, If you still smoke, DON'T INHALE the smoke. Sounds silly but it might satisfy you.

That's what I do. I just can't quit. One of my last sins. I could sure save a lot of money.

A whole carton costs an arm & a leg today. Even my avatar shows me with one of the

"Coffin Nails".

AZ Jim, The guy who used to live next door needed daily oxygen. He carried around with him a little machine,

about the size of an old Kodak box camera, that generated oxygen. His lungs were shot from his old job;

something about mining. GOOGLE " Small oxy generators."

Ask your Dr for a referral to maybe a pulmonary specialist. You probably need testing to see what you need exactly.

I'm surprised your dr didn't refer one when you had your heart attack....if your oxygen is that low, I'm sure it's been low for awhile.

Im an ex smoker and mine is 98-99 at the drs office, just sitting there but im sure I have some COPD.

My mom was on oxygen but at first it was only during the night.

Good luck!! :)

My oxygen level is also in the 90's..

When I quit , some 20 years ago...I do not know if it helped ? but it didn't hurt. Suggested by a doc....Lay your pack of smokes next to the dirtiest ashtray you have. Each time you get the urge to light up , remind yourself that the inside of your lungs look or will look similar to that ashtray in the future.

I did that, never lit up again....gave the remaining carton to the bar up the street..[old hang out] and put my Zippo away forever......yipee !

I'm 24 days shy of 3 years smoke free. Now that I'm retired, I don't think I could afford a 70.00 per week habit- that's $3640.00 per year!

I understand how difficult it is.

The secret of how I finally quit is simple. I decided I neded to quit, that's step one. I then set my Q day (Quit day) about 3 months out. I picked my birthday. From then until Q day every time I lit up I was mentally reminded that it was going to end before long. On the eve of Q day, I sat by the fireplace, smoked one after another until I was sick of the rotten taste, then I cast the remaining packs of cigs into the fire. Next morning when I got up I knew would be bad but each time the urge hit, I diverted myself with a cup of coffee, a bite of candy, etc.. As the day wore on I thought to myself that before long I would have been off the weed for a whole day. The next day, same 4rountine and the urges came less frequently. Soon it was a week, at that point I knew I could do it. A month passed, another, a year and by then I hated even being within a block of someone smoking. The trick of this system is during the time between deciding to quit and Q day you are actually subject to self created power of suggestion. I would be dead had I not quit when I did. If you do this tell people you are quitting and you know your failure will show should you wuss out and resume. Get rid of ash trays, anything that reminds you of smoking on the night you quit!!!! You CAN do it.

I've been to one. She wanted me to use steroid inhaler. I use one now (not steroid) but the side effects were so risky for me I decided not to do it. Thanks CeeCee

Jim...have you tried Symbicort? I’ve been on it about 5 years now. Helps a little. I also use an albuteral inhaler at times. Not on oxygen yet, hope I never have to. I was surprised to hear you aren’t on any medications yet. As you know, there is no cure, but you can slow it down some. Good luck Jim.

Also, try small walks and deep breathing excercises.

I know 2 people who are on O2. One has a machine that makes the O2 and the other gets bottles and a large canister ever so often. If I ever need it I would get the machine that makes the O2. Best to you.

I quit about 25 years ago and about 3 years ago the doctor said I have a touch of COPD. Odd that it took so long to affect me. Some days are a little worse than others but again I only have a minor case of it. I was two packs a day of a NOW cigarettes and I think smoking that brand helped me cold turkey because they are so low in tar and nicotine. I never believed I would ever quit and that is what kept me smoking. I don't credit will power rather I simply snapped because there was no struggle and I mean no struggle. Sunday I told my self I would put out my last cigarette in the work parking lot Monday morning and I kept my pack in my pocket for 7 days then tossed it. I could never pay $7 a pack, that alone would make me quit.
