I have not flown for at least 40 years

Just arrive at the airport early, have a coffee, and sit back and wait. They have nice departure areas in Australia.

Make sure you don’t have any scissors in your carry on. I was pulled aside for that even after several flights on this trip. Not even the little tiny scissors and no knives, etc.

You’re off to your new life. Sit back and enjoy the view.

me too... I knew very well being a frequent flier, not to have anything sharp in my carry -on... but this one time I'd bought a sealed pack of scissors.. you know the type of packet where you have to get a chain saw to open it..?... and I put them in the carry-on bag... and they just took them out and threw them right in the bin..unopened... in front of me....

I couldn't say anything but I was furious !
 
20 years ago when my friend taught me how to knit she let me know that they allowed knitting needles on the plane and I was shocked by that. She also said I could bring a small child size scissors as long as they had round tips to cut the yarn with. Every time I fly, I take them so I can knit on the plane.

That was the plan. Though to give up what I have is fraught with uncertainty.
A single guy over 60 trying to get a rental would be nigh on impossible.
Before I relinquish this place, I will go over to Melbourne and see if the arrangement would be
compatible with me living there full time.
