Many thanks to everyone for your advice and well wishes. I appreciate you all so much.
Friday morning is when I first noticed a slight cough and scratchy throat. By Friday night I was miserable, throat on fire, coughing nonstop, bad headache. One of the hallmarks of Influenza A is its rapid onset and that was certainly true for me.
I’m on day 5 now. No longer have a fever, that only lasted a day. My throat stopped hurting sometime in the night last night. No slow decrease, it was like someone just flipped a switch. The severe headaches have subsided, now more of a dull ache. Stomach cramps have stopped. I’m still nauseous after I eat and I’m not eating much, mostly carbs….a slice of buttered toast, a few bites of rice, some applesauce. I’ve lost about 7 lbs.
I’m drinking lots of OJ and electrolyte water. I’m still coughing constantly. My abs are on fire, every time I cough the pain from those abused muscles is severe. And I’m more fatigued than I can ever remember being. Getting off the couch or out of bed to use the bathroom is exhausting, my heart’s pounding and my head is swimmy by the time I get back to bed.
I understand that all these things are within normal parameters for Influenza A. I’m a healthy, strong and active 72 year old and I’ve been vaccinated, so I can’t help but wonder how much worse it would’ve hit me if I were sickly to begin with. I can understand why folks, especially seniors, end up in the emergency room or the hospital with flu. It’s very rough.
Ron’s fine for which I’m profoundly grateful. He’s feeling better and better each day as his recovery from pneumonia progresses. He’s leaving shortly for his daughter’s house to have a Christmas celebration with his kids and grands. I’m sorry to miss it, it’s always fun.
Christmas for my crew is on hold. We’ll have our typical Christmas gathering when I’m no longer contagious and feeling stronger…perhaps this weekend, or maybe New Years weekend, depending. My daughter came by with soup and cough drops and fluids, one of my boys sent a care package and another door dashed a meal. Ron’s been taking excellent care of me. I’m well looked after and grateful for it. I just want it to be over.
