I keep getting calls from a credit management agency

At least one every weekday. I haven't answered yet since I looked them up online and they are a debt collection agency. Some sites say they are legit and some say it's a scam. I don't have any debts of which I'm aware, I don't even have a credit card and pay all other debts by check or ACH. Seems to me I would have been contacted by mail.

I hadn't experienced this since one kid had a small student loan addendum that had fallen between the cracks. He didn't live with me but they couldn't track him down.

I had him go through his paperwork and find it: $3500. Then I split the cost with him to pay it all off at once. Problem solved, no penalties and no "bounty" paid to the collection agency.

You're surprised? Why? This happens daily to everyone.

Never, never answer a call from a number you don't recognize. Saying hello and when asked if this is Debodun, saying yes can do a lot of damage. Do not say yes. Hang up. Scammers have a method of splicing your "yes" into their own program with you agreeing to heaven knows what.

I get them and don't bother to answer, then block the number. The latest is American Van Lines and another called Maya Van Lines leaving voice mail telling me that they need a detailed list of items I want moved to California. Right. Delete messages. Block number. Report as spam.

Bold... : This is fact, it has been proven that even saying one word, particularly Yes... can be used just as Gigi describes...

When we lived in AZ I use to get calls 3/4 times a day that said I was eligible for my student loans to be cancelled...just call this number. I ignored them but one day I answered because I wanted to see what they'd say when I told them I was 75 years old and didn't have any student loans. He didn't know what to say at first then he said he'd "remove my number". I still got those annoying calls.

Check your credit report to make sure you have not been a victim of ID theft of some kind. It's FREE.

I strongly agree.

Whenever I get one of those "Your Blahblah Bank charge card has been frozen due to fraudulent activity" and I don't HAVE an account there, I check to see if someone has opened one in my name.

It doesn't hurt to be cautious and check.

They are relentless. I wish I could block the phone numbers, but it's a different number every time they call. I can only block 10 numbers with my phone service. The Caller ID indicated MCM which is a collection agency. So far:

It's annoying, I totally get it. But don't cave in and answer them. They're crooks.

Have you considered talking to your phone company about them?

For what it's worth, Deb... I found this:

"Midland Funding LLC is a legitimate debt collection agency that focuses on consumer debts under their parent company, Encore Capital Group — a major debt buyer. If Midland contacts you, you should first validate the alleged debt. Once you verify that the debt belongs to you, you can choose how to deal with Midland. Your main options are disputing the debt (if the information is incorrect or you disagree with the debt amount), or negotiating a settlement so you end up paying a portion of the debt."

(Have you checked your credit report? I know you don't have credit cards and stuff, but since this seems to be a real collection company, I think I'd want to at least know what's going on.)
