I Keep My Door Locked. Do You?

Especially now, you never know. I lock my apartment door even if I just go down to my car which I can see from the front door. When I owned that house and I worked in the yard, the garage door to the house was locked, even with a fenced in back yard. And of coarse the front door is locked when I'm home. I do have the sliding glass door open sometimes, I'm upstairs.

I thought of this because of a case today where an infant was kidnapped from the grandmother's apartment. She brought the child inside in his car seat and went back to the car to get the groceries and the child was taken. He's been found safe and people are in custody.

Edit to add: I meant to put this in general discussions so if mods want to move it, but I guess it is related to a news story.

I do for sure at night. During the day it depends on what I'm doing but if I leave I lock up. The other thing I do is close my garage door if I'm going into the house for any length of time.

Yes, I keep my doors locked at all times. While I have no reason to be fearful where I live, it has always been my practice. I do sleep sometimes with my bedroom window open but it faces the backyard and the yard is fenced so I don't feel vulnerable. Plus my dog reacts to EVERYTHING so if someone or something would approach, she would bark non-stop.

No..I don't keep my doors locked when I'm at home..except in the evening when it gets dark. I shut the front door, but not the back door...the back door only get closed when it's raining or freezing cold.. but both doors are locked at night.

My back garden is completely enclosed with high fencing , and mature trees and shrubs,... and despite this being a very safe place to live.. I was burgled 35 years ago, when I went to bed and left the small window open in the livingroom, ... that's when I first started taking shooting lessons.. .

I was on high alert for about 10 years afterwards..no kidding, my house was like Fort Knox, alarms everywhere .... but I've relaxed since then, I just make sure everything is locked up whenever I go out.. or go to sleep, and I have security lights, and video cameras .. but otherwise no..I don't make myself a prisoner in my own home..

I lock doors at night, or usually when we're out, but otherwise they're open. It's not unusual for the postie or delivery person to open the door and leave things in. There is very little domestic crime here, but there is some agricultural crime like theft of farm equipment or livestock.

IMO it's just common sense to keep my apartment and my car locked.

Living on the third floor helps provide some additional peace of mind.

I'm not sure how much protection locks provide when a window can easily be broken if someone wants to gain access to the average home or vehicle.

In this area, people experience window air conditioner push in vandalism or burglaries during the summer months.

We lock our doors at night, and I turn the porch lights on in front and back of the house when I lock the doors. Also, I received a new free old style security camera system and have the four cameras monitoring the front of the house. We have a dog, and he patrols in and out of the house and barks when he sees a person or a racoon or a squirrel on his property. Sometimes we say he is our dog morning wake up alarm. Our dog alarm.

We used to be able to leave unlocked when out in yard or on a stroll in neighborhood etc but no longer.
We get waves of homeless................ i have mentioned many times before big city tries to ship their problem elsewhere ... some camp in a green belt not far from neighborhood.......
We have now seen too many casing the houses near us.
On Superbowl Sunday this year ........... 3 houses had people just walk into their living rooms Crazies seemed lost and angry owners were there... one got into fight with Police claiming he lived there.......
usually high on drugs but not worth finding out if violent too so even when home i lock doors and do get up and look if dog seems alert etc .....

When my sister lived in her apartment she had to take groceries up a flight of stairs had to make a few trips .......... IF she left car unlocked neighborhood kids would get into and open and eat her groceries ...... sad sad world

Doors are always locked. One of the easiest crimes is someone walking in your front door while the family is in the backyard. I’ve mentioned the key code locks we have on the door. Push a button to lock, push the code to open. These are mechanical, not part of a security system.

Years ago a neighbour had someone enter from his open garage door at the front and then open his door into the house. They heard him and he took off running.

we have triple glazing here , it's surprisingly difficult to break a triple glazed window..

🤣 Lock the doors? Sometimes.

Sometimes I come home from the shops to find that not only was the front door not locked, it was not even shut. My mother reckoned if the door was always open then the burglars would be worried that you might be close by and return to surprise them. Her front door was always open by day and the old fashioned windows were always open to let in the fresh air.

Our back door is only shut and locked when we go to bed.

I hate locks. It is my belief that locks don't deter burglars but they sure are a nuisance when I don't have the necessary key to let myself in. Our doors actually have dead locks fitted but I have a horror of being locked in with an intruder or a raging fire and being unable to find the key in time. The dead locks are never engaged.

Our building code does not allow locks that cannot be easily opened from the inside.

When I was a student I lived in a bad neighborhood in Baton Rouge, always left the car doors unlocked, saved getting the windows broken...

We only lock car and home doors in our primary residence (we live out in the country) if we are leaving for a trip for several days. However, we do lock our property in another town at all times.

I always lock my door. I noticed when I first moved into my apartment that some people will knock but turn the door knob to open it before I get to the door. So I started locking it as soon as I come inside. Now it is a habit. As for leaving my apartment to go downstairs, I always lock the door. I have expensive computer equipment, jewelry and a camera inside and do not want to risk it.

Yes, all the time. I have cameras also that alert me if someone or something comes in the front yard or in the driveway. I also have a security system that I activate at night and whenever I leave the house. I live in a low crime neighborhood but since I am a female living alone I would prefer to take precautions. Plus the security system also alerts for smoke/fire or carbon monoxide so that provides peace of mind for myself and for the dog when she is here alone.
