I like local day trips — here’s one we took today

I just moved to south western Missouri last summer so have been enjoying exploring. Today we went to Carthage, MO which has a civil war site and lots of historical buildings.

The visitors center gave me two guidebooks, one for walking and one for driving, with the history of all the 19th century buildings and architecture.

We didn’t do all that today but two of the things we did was visit the civil war museum and an antique mall. By “we”, I mean me and my two wee dogs. They were allowed every place we visited, which was cool.IMG_5444.jpeg

I absolutely love daytrips.. however in the last few years since the onset of ''working from home''...our roads are congested to the Max. There is now no days when we can guarantee the roads will be quiet.
Always we'd know if we go on a school day, and most people actually AT work the roads would be realtively clear.. not now.. there's no such animal.. people who take their laptops shopping or to the beach supposedly working from home.. means all of us who are not working can never find a time when the roads are not jaammed solid, which makes it hard to go on day trips... but I still try

I’m glad I live in a pretty uncongested area. Biggest town is an hour away.

I love day trips, too, and I used to have relatives who lived in the Carthage area when I lived in central Missouri for a time. Missouri is a great state for road trips; so is Virginia. There's really nowhere (interesting) to go in my state.

Some time ago, I was in a Women's Club
and there was a Day Trip group with a leader who
made the arrangements once a month.
Went on many..
to the yearly Decorators Show house, which was always spectacular,
Museums
with lunch to a restaurant ( probably wouldn't go to alone)
Once to the local NFL team's stadium..intefesting
All were enjoyable😉

I have a membership which gives me the choice of 400 places to visit on a day trip.. which will be free for me to enter... and some of these places are quite expensive to get into for a day pass usually about £20 .. so this membership which is valid for 12 months and cost me just £52 .. is like gold dust...

Places to visit
I think I recently read about those memberships, @hollydolly; they sound so interesting!

yes they really are. I was lucky because they usually cost around double the price I paid.. but 2 weekends ago I visited a stately home that I'd visited several times in the past with my husband.. and now this time on my own..It's almost £20 entry fee... but the lady on the gate told me if I sgned up for an annual membership I would get my admission fee returned ..so my curiosity peaked..I went to the office, and there, they told me that with a senior concession, it would only cost me £52.. and also I got my £19.50 entry fee back as well..

For that price I get free entry to over 400 destinations, not just England but Scotland and Wales as well.. and free parking ( they gave me a parking sticker for my windscreen ).. or at the very least reduced priced parking...at all of the properties...

..so I'm going to do my best to vist a few... it'll only take 3 or 4 for me to have recouped my intial membership fee...

You can see on the link above that I posted just how many places there are to visit...:D(y)

I love a nice day trip! I love sometimes doing it solo and other times it's fun to be with friends/family. It depends on how I feel at the time. There are so many places to visit my bucket list is going to keep me alive for at least 10 extra years! LOL

the thing is I live in the countryside.. the roads leading to the motorways are uncongested... it's when I get to the motorway the problems begin. For example I live 20 miles from the centre of London... on a bad day that can take 2 hour of driving, sometimes even more if it's rush hour.... and remember we drive manuals by and large here..so the pain in legs and arms after constant gear changes for hours on end isn't funny..

Hollydolly,is it the National Trust? I used to be a member & used it a lot, the parking is especially useful in some places, especially in the Lakes. But I used to take my little dog I had then & they became more & more restrictive, starting to ban her even from gardens, then the parklands, you could only walk her in the car park!
I’m thinking of joining English Heritage as they are a lot more welcoming. I was in the NT for Scotland for a few years & they too were much more forgiving.

I'm in the National Trust for Scotland which also covers the whole of the UK. There is one castle about 20 mins drive away from here, and a good few within an easy day's drive. Of course, not all historic or important properties are owned by the National Trust, so you still have to pay for some.

No not the NT..they're rubbish really....for all the reasons you state. No this is English Heritage (y)

I just won't drive or ride on the wrong side of the road! Have no bucket list needs there.
No bucket list long flight dreams either! Nowhere in the world is cooler than the USA, Midwest!

If you want some excitement in your life, you may want to visit North St. Louis. I would recommend to go armed.

Day trips? I have lived in Pennsylvania for over 50 years and after the last five years, I have seen just about everything historical in this state. A few if my favorite places are: Independence Hall, Gettysburg and Hershey. You could also visit the USS New Jersey.

Independence Hall is full of history and you can spend hours there.
