They told me to give up sweets and I did.
They told me to give up white bread...I did.
They told me to quit smoking and I did.
They told me to quit bacon and I did.
They told me to quit drinking booze......

AZ Jim, If I may ask how old are you? Now I agree with quitting smoking. I am definitely not a doctor and do not know you health issues, but if you are not diabetic what would be wrong with having a sweet in moderation? Also at the older age what is really wrong with having white bread? Is having bacon in moderation say once or twice a week horrible? Also having a drink or two has shown to be a good thing in moderation. Like I said, I don't know your health background, but somethings sound quite extreme when doctors say cut things out altogether.

Babs in about 4.5months I'll be 83. My little post was just in jest. I still use white bread, some sweets, and bacon. All kidding aside thanks for your concern. PS You asked about my health. I've had three heart bypasses, three Mini-strokes,artery surgery, lower back surgery, I use part time oxygen for my COPD, both knees shot (too old for surgery), arthritis.....I now eat what I want, drink what I want and the amount I want. The love of my life died 3 months ago after our 48 years together in marriage. I quit smoking in '89 after smoking 40+years. I had my good times....

Jim, I will be 80 come September and I use the word moderation a lot when it comes to eating. At the age I am now I am not going to cut out any food or snack that I enjoy because some doctor half my age told me. I probably will outlive him or her in the long run anyway. I am a feisty one. I am sorry for you loss of your wife that has to be awful. I know about arthritis as I have it in one of my hips, but heck I am not going to get hip surgery at my age. I say you are living and enjoying your life and that is important.

LOL! No Jim I didn't really quit it.....

Fakin' bacon is great, so is the Soysage I cook up, for some breakfasts, although it needs to be pressed in my tortilladora so it'll thoroughly cook. I average a beer, or two, a month, only Guinness Extra Stout. My wine intake is about the same. Smoking is the dumbest thing anyone can do. Cigarettes killed my dad, even though he stopped smoking, after forty-five years. Five years later came emphysema, then lung cancer. He was 85. I believe he'd still be alive, today, if not for cigarettes. Sugar is a killer, too, but I'm not partial to it. White bread is horrible, chemical stuff. I make my own spelt rolls and corn muffins. I don't care about longevity. I just like eating foods that I know are good for my health, while I'm here.

A sweet in moderation is also okay if you have diabetes..didn't know that at first but do now. :) Not every day all the time..once in awhile.

I just read two different articles, on in the NY TIMES & one on the health page of local paper (which doesn't advocate any of the whack doodle stuff) that experts are suggesting easing up on super strict blood pressure control and pressure to lower A1c to non diabetic levels in people over 75 as attempting to do so may do more harm than good by the stress. For myself I try to keep decent numbers but am not a fanatic about it & made it to >80.
