I made a sword!

River (teen grandchild) and I attended an all-day sword casting class and it was awesome!

We picked our templates (there were 8 or 9 choices) I chose a Xiphos sword and Rivvie a Kris dagger.

They use a combination of sand, clay and something else to make the special sand that is used to cast the sword. When the molten metal is poured into the shape, the sand withstands the high temps and creates the sword, which is then cooled enough to be handled.

They handed out metal grinders and we used those to grind off the rough edges and polish the sword.
The hilt was then wrapped in leather, the teacher inspected each sword one last time, and we left with our masterpieces!

It was such a fun day! He travels all over the US to teach these classes with a large truck and a trailer that hauls all his equipment! If you’re interested, here’s his info.

I noticed the girl using a power grinder. Shouldn't that be done with a piece of sandstone or something? ;) But it's still a fun project, and I enjoyed reading about it.

I have no idea! Never done anything like this before.

I imagine professionals use all manner of grinding and polishing techniques and especially to make a sharp edge. In our case, we were specifically told to not make a sharp edge during class, and that was one of the things that was checked before we left. The teacher then made it clear that what we did to the sword after we took it home was our business! 😉
