I got a message from someone from HSUS (US Humane Society), the office that does dog fighting investigations. I returned the call today to give her as many details as I could. It was a bit scary though. I mean they guarantee anonymity, that on any records you're merely "a tip". But you're dealing with scary people...who might think of poisoning your pups if not worse in retribution.
The other day I came across this quote from Elie Wiesel
“The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.”
That gave me the strength to make the call. I mean you can live in fear and some people would just say "Hey it's none of your business, it's just a bunch of dumb bangers, they're just dogs, there goes the neighborhood". But no you have to care. Those guys are animals. You want to make money fighting? Man up and start some kind of fight club and beat on each other, you can make even higher bets and it's you getting hurt not some poor pup you're throwing in the ring.
She said they busted a big local group not too long ago. Maybe these guys are a spin off from them? The house has no number but they can look into seeing who owns the house or even if it's in foreclosure or something and they're just using the space. They can start taking plate numbers and the detectives will be watching them more closely. Won't be hard, the police station is two blocks away. Hope to see in the paper eventually that they made a case. You can't stop them all, but you do what you can.
