I may be getting a dog

Right now, this is just a possibility. It's a complicated story. My step-sister might have a dog to give me. Dad will talk to her tonight. I could have the dog by Sunday Oct 16. So far, all I know is that the dog is a "Weiner" dog, very well trained, house-trained etc.

I had my dog, Bandit, from 1972-1990 (17 years, anyway). I've put off getting a dog for decades. Now, I'm ready for a new dog!

Congratulations Ron, sorry you lost your Bandit. I could have never stayed that long without a dog. Weiner dogs are so cute, a lot of them are barkers though, but not all. Are you going to meet the dog and make sure you both take to each other before bringing him home? Boy or girl?

Glad you are getting another dog Ron.

Only problem with "Weiner" dogs is that they keep the door open TOO long when you're letting them in or out.

Not good in cold climates.

Congratulations on the new dog :) I know my little dog is my best little friend & hope yours is as much a joy to you :)

I'm still waiting to hear back from my Dad. He said he'd discuss it with my step-sister tonight. I've been invited to a party at my step-sister's house on Sunday. (it's most likely to celebrate Dad's 89th birthday!) I'd meet the dog for sure, then.

I love the joke! We have entryways that are long enough so one door would close before the other one opened! We're in the suburbs. There is a park nearby, and plenty of nice, safe streets, grass, etc!

Oh, yes, I'll be glad to be a dog owner again. I wasn't always able to have another dog in places I've lived since the 1990s. I was married from 1999 to 2005. The (ex) wife had two dogs & two cats. I loved them a lot. I think the hardest part of our divorce was leaving the pets behind. She'd had them for years before we married.

Good for you!!!! I mean my dear Kashi was gone a month and I had to go out and find someone new. Best wishes on your new baby:love_heart:

fureverywhere, I'm glad you found a new companion. Here's a picture of my dog Bandit. I had him for 17 years. He passed away around 1989.

I couldn't go without a dog that long -- they are such great companions. I'm so glad you're getting a dog. If, for some reason, this one doesn't pan out for you, please go down to a shelter or a rescue and see what wonderful dogs they have. You can find wonderful adult dogs that are house trained and just longing for a home. I found my Bonnie that way (and every dog before her) and Bonnie is just the perfect dog for me. I really don't want to manage puppies, so I always get an adult or a senior dog -- they need homes so badly, and the puppies always get adopted first.

Yeah, I agree, dogs make great companions. I got Bandit at an Animal Shelter. He was 6 weeks old at the time. Bandit was absolutely no trouble at all. He was a fast learner, and loved to please. However, at my current age, I think an older dog is more convenient. It's even more special to get an adult dog at a Shelter. All too often an older dog gets passed over in favor of puppies. I'd be saving his/her life, and the dog would return the favor many times over.

Ameriscot, I'm the shy type. I rarely go out much. In my younger days, I went out for a job. Now, I'm retired, and have plenty of free time to share with a dog!

Bandit was a sweetie! That photo was taken when Bandit was 9 years old. It's a really funny story! I looked for a room-mate, and ended up living at the house of a woman who worked near where I worked. Her name was Betty. She turned out to be a drunkard, with a hatred for men. She'd been divorced, and worked out a joint custody agreement over the dog they had when they were married. The dog was a pure black female collie. (I don't remember the name.) The dog visited on weekends.

The female dog had not been neutered, because Betty (the house-mate) kept saying she might have the black collie breed to make show dogs. She never did. The female collie was an absolute air-head. She was high-strung, and absolutely clueless about everything. Betty insisted that I have Bandit neutered because she didn't want her pure Black collie "contaminated" by Bandit. Yes, I know the fashionable thing is to have your pets spayed or neutered at an early age. Let's just say Bandit & I were very close and I kept him safe. OK, well he did get together with a couple female dogs. But that's another story for another time.

How does the rhubarb come in?! We had a rhubarb patch in the back yard. Betty got drunk every day after work, and said she wanted to pick the rhubarb and make a pie. One day she picked the rhubarb, and left it on the picnic table. That photo is my "inside joke!"

As an aside, Bandit was neutered during the 1980 Presidential Election. I worked in the Voter Registration (Elections) Department at the time. We worked a lot of overtime. Bandit had to wait a few extra days to get his stitches taken out. I had been worried that neutering might somehow change Bandit. He was the same friendly, lively dog as before, and he maintained the same weight all his life!
