till the lid will fall off....A delivery person yesterday noticed two squirrels working on
the lid hinges chewing away!!!! I don't know why they started this, or actually when..
But it needs to stop!@!!!!!

See if you can get some old pantyhose and stuff the toe ends with mothballs like maybe 8-10 something like that and tie them off in a knot and somehow tie these bundles to the trash can hinges so that they're easily noticed by the squirrels. It should deter them.

I can’t wait to hear the story of how Hawk got hold of some used pantyhose, that story would be more interesting than the squirrels. 😉🤭😂

You got me curious.
From the comments below a video I watched...
"after trying ammonia and strong mint scent, the squirrel in my roofs crawl space was not impressed..he even batted around moth balls like he was Pele..then 2 days ago i tried the repels all spray..i actually lucked up and must have gotten it on the little guy..i heard him run like a bat out of hell..have not heard a peep from him for 2 days..so far so good...it does have a funky smell but it worked."

I've used several products and methods in the past... it seems like sometimes they someone
but not for another... this one has a good track record.

(I loved that line "i actually lucked up and must have gotten it on the little guy..i heard him run like a bat out of hell..have not heard a peep from him for 2 days... so far so good") Too funny!!

Also wanted to add that this one isn't particularly rainproof and needs to be reapplied. I've used some that meant to stay on... like a gel or whatever. They work too but tend to collect all the debris in the local environment that you can imagine... and some things that you can't!!

I have a squirrel problem in my roof. I hope to get this stuff and see if I can use it in some way.

I do almost the same @OldFeller - I store food scraps in a plastic container placed in the bottom of the refrigerator. It has a tight fitting lid. It it develops an odor, I pour in a small amount of half and half bleach and water, and it instantly kills all odors. It would probably be better to store scraps in the freezer, but I'm short on room in there.

Anyway, the point is, neither of us are throwing food scraps into the kitchen trash can. I've seen people who just rake food directly from their plate into the regular kitchen trash can, and that's going to smell in just a few hours.

There are some hilarious youtube videos showing people trying to keep squirrels out of their bird feeders.
The squirrels usually win most of the time. :D

If all else fails you might need to get a metal trash can. Walmart has those old looking round ones for $30-$40.

No amount of watering saved it during one of our scorching hot summers but when mama had a persimmon tree the squirrels would get to the ripe fruit before we could so I bought a live trap.

I'd bait the trap with persimmons that they'd already eaten on and it was not unusual to catch at least a couple a day (once in awhile a possum also) and I'd then drive them to a wooded area across the river about three miles away and release them.

The downside ?.....it seemed like for every one I caught and hauled off ten of his drinking buddies would come looking for him.

I have friends living a five-minute drive on the "backroad" from where I live. They strolled back into their house from their office building, only to find a bear had gotten in through a door they'd left slightly ajar. The bear hadn't yet made it into the kitchen, but was eating detergent powder from the box in the adjacent laundry room!

I tried that product, Ted01. Twenty bucks gone and boy does it stink, but the squirrels and mice were okay with it.
That's too bad @gruntlabor, I'm sorry that it didn't work for you.
How did you end up dealing with whatever problem you were having?

Still, as I said earlier... what works for one person won't work for the next.
It seems to me that some of it might be situational... but I also wonder if it might
include aspects of the "pest's" individual make-up. Like some many people don't like the odor
of a skunk... I happen to like it, and others that I've met do too.
Some individual animals might be fine w/Repels All product while others funny away at first wiff!
IDK...

Home a pet hawk in the area of your trash bins............. :-D
Aye... the natural solution is one that I would prefer to deterrence.
Perhaps a slightly more practical solution would be to get a dog... squirrel dogs/"ratters" would
be a good choice... especially for those that would need to get it up in the attic!! 😅

But, if you like the hawk... and aren't afraid of getting arrested for it... go for it!! 😂

I had squirrels in the house, NOT in the rafters, well, probably in the rafters but certainly in every room in the house. It was a nightmare because they were big and very bold, and numerous --not afraid of me.
I chased them around the house with a broom. I hired an exterminator who left traps and said he'd be back --to no effect.
I hired tree-removal people to take down a tree that was overhanging my roof. That fixed the problem.
Now I don't have a garden or any edible plants on the grounds. No compost heaps, no garbage cans, no bird feeders. Works for me.
I hate squirrels.

I had forgotten about this, but a house I had years ago had an 8 foot privacy fence that butted up to the edge of the house which had vinyl siding. One day, I looked up and saw a big spot of siding damaged where the fence met the house, and it had been done by a squirrel. In that case, I don't know what he was after.

I got the siding repaired, then nailed jagged metal flashing to the top of the fence so that sharp points stuck upward. Sometime after that, I saw him through the window go up there, but once he realized he couldn't get to the siding, he backed off and I wasn't bothered with him again.
