I Need To Get A Referee Whistle

We must be the last breed of still having a landline. We both have cell phones but for some reason I just will not give up the landline. Anyway, we get sooo many calls during the day from numbers we do not even know. We do not answer if we do not recognize the number. The numbers show up on caller ID and our TV's. And they are the same numbers every day! I told my husband I was going to get a whistle and pick up and blow into the phone when they call! He says I am getting "fiesty" in my old age! We have been signed up for the "No Call List", but that seems to be a crock! Atleast, I can block unwanted calls on my cell phone. Do they have home phones that have the "block" feature on them?
 

I talked to my phone co and they said I can block up to 18 calls somehow but that's a futile attempt because there are so many, I don't have time to fool with that. I do what you do. It's aggravating and I don't think phone co care at all. My hunch is they want to do away with landlines altogether. But it's crazy, we pay $$ to be harassed.

Maggiemae, we have a home phone that does have the blocking feature. They are Panasonic cordless. We bought them at Sam's and I love being able to block unwanted calls. Your letter sounds like our same situation.

Carla, we still have our landline and we have a service called Basic Talk for $9.00 a month. On our cordless phones we can block up to 250 names.
 
A free landline service called NOMOROBO blocks calls that are dialed by computer. I can't believe how many it's blocked, usually 3-5 per day. Every once in a while one gets through, but the service has been wonderful. The phone rings once and then silence as the call is blocked. Took all of five minutes to set it up online. Nothing to buy or install.

I have Cox telephone service and I can block unwanted calls by doing a certain thing on my phone.
 
I use some of these calls to let off steam at some other happening by yelling at them to bugger off. I think the psychologists call this displacement...
 
Aw rats! Nomorobo looked to be a good deal, read a favorable review on PC Mag. I got all signed up with Nomorobo, was directed to go to my provider's website(Frontier) where I met the dead end. Seems that with Frontier(Formerly Verizon) you have to be on the FIOS(fiber optic) network in order for robo call blocking to work. Out here, on the edge of civilization we are just on the ancient copper wire network, which is just zero degrees of separation from Alexander Graham Bell's telegrath / telephone networks, of the 1870s.

Oh well, maybe in another 10 years the wife might consent to letting go of the landline. :shrug:
 
I still have my land line but I have a Digitone Call blocker located at http://www.digitone.com
It will block numbers by area code OR phone numbers. Most of the numbers, I block by area code because I don't know anyone from that area code. The others, I block by phone number. It has been money well spent and I haven't regretted it the first time!
 
I now find that most of the calls I recive are from cold callers. I have 'caller display' enabled on the phone and if I do not recognise the number, I ignore it. If it goes onto the ansaphone, they get a message telling them that I am registered with The Telephone Preference Service and that they should not be cold calling. They are also told that their number will be reported. If I can identify who has called me, I log that number in the phone's memory and it is displayed when they repeat the call. I have heard recently that one of the worst 'cold callers' here in the UK was fined £60k for sustained, unwanted calls to people on the TPS register. In my opinion, it is not enough.

I am sure that the phone companies could do more on this problem but are not motiviated to do so since it means a significant income to them. However, I do remain calm and don't let it bother me since it is now so common.
