I predict that in 20 years....

Good thoughts, caroln ... wonder how they're going to overtake Amazon who's already doing a lot of those things including healthcare and prescriptions?
Oh, I totally forgot about Amazon! That's a real "ding" in my scenario, isn't it? Maybe Amazon and Walmart merge and since Walmart owns all the stock, they keep the Walmart name. (I don't think I thought this all the way through. )

I think if WalMart and Amazon would get into this monstrously huge corporate war for dominance, we'd all benefit. And I could sure see that happening with the way they're going! @caroln

I'm an endless dreamer... so I predict in 20 years something really big and ugly would have happened that draws the country (and world) together into the kind of "1950s patriotic and togetherness feel" we had after 9-11. Sure would be nice to get some semblance of caring and watching out for each others' back.
I think you may be right about something big and ugly happening to draw people together. Unfortunately it is the "not so woke people" that cause the misery and demise for our planet.

over 2 billion people speak English, and in fact with the movement of Eastern European populations in the last few years to so many English speaking countries, we can expect those figures to rise...

...but that said.. my mother used to say when we as kids would ask if there would be a third world war... '' beware the yellow race''.. dunno where she got that from..that was 55 years ago.. but she stuck by it..
Yo hollydolly,
"beware the yellow race", also known as the 'Yellow Peril.' Credit Kaiser Wilhelm with coining that phrase back A.D., 1895. At least according to my source. Very possibly, that's where your mother came by the phrase.

Author Barbara TUCHMAN devotes the entirety of Chapter Two to it in her book, The Zimmermann Telegram.

Could be.. I don't know.. but given her superstitious nature I would think she's most likely to have been following Nostrodamus

I predict that in 20 years there will be a revolt of the "have nots". They have been promised so much for so many years by so many administrations but they are still marginalized and living in poverty.

The extremely wealthy have already built bunkers to hide away in the case of any type of disaster. One of the disasters could be an uprising against them.

On a positive note, I think that stem cells will be further used in many applications to overcome and cure various diseases.

The bunkers aren't going to save them. 😯

My husband told me his grandfather used to say, "Eat the rich." I thought that was his own saying until I found out differently.

Excerpt below from Wikipedia article. > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eat_the_rich

Woman with slogan and a hammer and sickle symbol with a fork instead of a hammer (Madrid, 2012)

"Eat the rich" is a political slogan associated with class conflict and anti-capitalism. The phrase is commonly attributed to political philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, from a quote first popularized during the French Revolution.

Pierre Gaspard Chaumette, President of the Paris Commune, gave a speech to the city during the Reign of Terror on 14 October 1793 in which he said:

Rousseau, who was also one of the people, said: 'When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich.'

The phrase was initially a criticism of the French Nobility, but it was later popularized in France as a response to the perceived failures of the French Revolution that perpetuated poverty in the country.

My predictions for what will happen within the next 20 years:

Technology, particularly in the home and healthcare robotic fields, will continue to improve and make our lives easier.

There will be a few medical breakthroughs, but not nearly as many as people hope or expect.

Another viral pandemic will arise with a much higher kill rate. In hindsight, Covid will be seen as a warning/opening act.

Anarchy will continue from the left and the right until the US institutes meaningful prison sentences and passes serious gun control measures. Before that happens, we'll become deemed a "too dangerous to travel to" country, international tourism will crater, and citizens will become so afraid to leave their houses that many will (attempt to) homeschool their kids and demand work-from-home jobs, all of which will threaten the underpinnings of the US educational system and economy.

Most of the rest of life will continue as it is, IMHO.

I believe that in 20 years, many forms of cancer and other diseases will be manageable if not curable, and that the human lifespan will be further extended. This may not be a blessing unless we are also able to extend vitality.
If big pharma were to find a cure for cancer do you think they would make it affordable to the lower and (what's left of) middle classes? Or, is it likely that they will try to profit as they did with Insulin?

Unless aliens attack, good luck with that

We are headed the other way with gun control, many states, particularly here in the south have already eliminated the need for permits and now endorse "open carry". A quick Google search shows that we already have the second or third-highest incarceration rate on the planet. I'm not sure we can afford to lock up too many more. I suspect the high crime rates and mass shootings are related to ever decreasing quality of life for most Americans. I suspect that in most cases, people that have a good-paying job, medical benefits, and generally good quality of life don't resort to violence nearly as often as those with nothing left to lose. Think of America in the late 50s and very early 60s.
I also think we are already considered an extremely dangerous country to travel to. The U.S. educational system is already considered to be defective in comparison to other civilized countries. We're the only country that thinks it's normal to saddle college graduates with a lifetime of debt needed to purchase an education. In most other countries it's free. We are here because profit is king.

Why would they pay for all the research for a real cure when they can keep making huge profits selling you dangerous crap that may kill you, and make record profits every year. The last thing they want is a real cure.

Saw an interesting movie today that was kind of about predicting the future. Not a great movie, but interesting, a little more political than necessary but still an interesting watch. Saw it on Amazon Prime.

Who is Amos Otis?

I like that concept. I'm going to take a look at it this evening... at least the movie trailer. :)

Watched the trailer - RE: Amos OTIS. Interesting. Not something I'm going to see on the broadcast networks. So, I can rent or purchase movies to watch on my computer with Az Prime? Time to hop aboard the C.21 train, I guess.

Not arguing any of what you wrote, just suggesting that we will eventually reach a tipping point on guns where people will start saying enough is enough. Or actually, enough is way too much. Not sure how anyone can feel truly "free" when we know we might be mowed down in a grocery store.

It's quite shocking that gun control didn't become a national push when the news hit about those little children who were slaughtered at Sandy Hook Elementary School. I avoid "open carry" states.

Accidental. Humans living cheek-by-jowl with wildlife provides so many more opportunities for viruses to cross into other species.

Bio warfare is a dangerous game that would quickly come back to haunt any country that starts it.
Indeed. Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), Bio being one of the trinary, are indiscriminate. No distilled in Identification Friend-or-Foe (IFF), at least not as yet far as we ordinaries know. Once unleashed, WMD has the potential to kill any and all in its path. Friend or foe.

The temptation to use it is now beginning to prevail over not being able to put the genie back in the bottle. It is literally becoming a global crap shoot. Hopefully, sane minds and the better angels of our nature will intervene before it comes to pass.
