I purchased internet security a few years ago.

I have had paid internet security for a number of years. Trend Micro Security.
I was advised by computer experts that there is ne need to pay for security as it is supplied with Windows.
I had Trend removed 5 months ago. No issues without it.
My subscription is due at the end of the month. Not going to renew.
Trend have been sending me reminders three times a week to renew my subscription.
They want my money.

I noticed a few years ago, many security software companies were offering cheap 1 year subscriptions BUT, it was based on auto-renew. So after your one year was up they would automatically bill you full price for the next year, and the next and the next and so on. The one I was using was Bitdefender but I noticed several others were doing the same thing.

They tell you that you can cancel at any time, lol. Just try and cancel your auto-renew; go ahead, see if you can. They make it next to impossible. There's no live person or chat or phone numbers or customer service email that you can access so, beware of any service that wants to give you a cheap initial price that is tied to an Auto Renew condition!

I haven't purchased such a product, my Windows computer software is supposed to provide security, and Apple has supposedly had very strong security built into its IOS platforms. I am not aware of any issues resulting from my reliance on the built in provided security. I do get tired of the spam and spoofed test messages and phone calls.

I tried using the feature on my iPhone that ditched calls from any number not in my contacts and found that was problematic. Post surgery I was to get a phone call on my phone about my wife's status but since the phone number was not in contacts it never made it too me. My thought is that a call of great importance to me could be blocked so I turned that setting off.

Wow, just wow.
I have never had auto renewal of my subscription.
Got this email from Trend today

We have attempted to automatically renew your Trend Micro subscription, but could not process your credit card. As a result, your subscription has not been renewed.

My original card stopped working 12 months ago and was replaced.

This behaviour by Trend is bordering on fraudulent.
If my card had not been changed, payment would have been taken without my consent.
The business world wonders why a large percentage of the public look on them as scoundrels and thieves.

Auto renew is turned on my default when you make the purchase, most of us don't read the terms of service so this is often missed but it can be turned off at any time after the purchase. Set Up Auto Renew for Trend Micro: A Simple Guide
I have been in IT for 25 years and at home I use Windows Security which works just fine.

Automatic renewal was not part of my subscription. That is why they have been hounding me for 2 months to renew.
Fraudulent, I say.

I never heard of Trend Micro, but that's just one of a million things I never heard of. The ratings for the product is so-so, it ain't bad, but it ain't that good either.
One of the downsides is "nonstop ads and pop ups".
I think you can't throw a rock without hitting a free internet security site.

My computer guy told me the same thing. He said Microsoft Defender (comes with Microsoft 365) is much better and he has some concerns about my then-current antivirus (PC Matic). He strongly recommended that I remove it from our computers.

The biggest danger to your security is you. Do you click on weird emails? Do you go to nefarious web sites?

I don't pay for any security, but I'm well aware of the dangers and know what to avoid. In fact, just today I got a very convincing email, but it had no sender - a big no-no. In short, you don't have to pay, just be careful.
