I received notification of my speeding fine

Did you see mine the other day.? 2 weeks ago at my hospital appointment there was no visitor parking spaces, I drove around and around for 15 minutes waiting for one to become free.. none did and I was in danger o being late for my appointment so I had no option..but to park in the Staff car park. I was there just over an hour... and the fine came though the post yesterday...

A hundred Ozzie dollars, fifty-two quid, is that all? What a wimpish fine. Think yourself fortunate that you are not UK based. The amount you would have been fined here depends on what the speed limit was and how much over it you were driving. It's usually a percentage of your weekly income, up to a maximum of £1,000 (£2,500 if you were driving on a motorway.) You could also be disqualified from driving or have your licence suspended. Speeders boost the UK economy like no other. £2.5K is almost $4,800 Australian dollars.

This should never be allowed. I think they never have enough parking spots because it is a great revenue raiser.
Scandalous is what I call it.

Which is why we are called the lucky country.
Common sense prevails.
I would get all my friends to send emails to all the Politicians on a daily basis complaining about the severity of the fines.
Bring it to their attention and write letters to the editor.
Scandalous.

I totally agree. I was sounding off about this to my friends... it's like a deliberate act.. overbooking patients appointments when they know they don't have the parking spaces enough for them.

The fact is it's a national scandal to even charge patients to park in hospitals

There’s never enough parking at hospitals; they need the land for more buildings here. When we have an early morning appointment, we allow an hour to find a spot. It’s not unusual to need much of that hour. Once in an emergency, DH parked in a resident’s only area and there was a very nasty note left on the car.

@hollydolly or @horseless carriage, do many people speed?

I absolutely agree. This is little more than theft. Were there prominently displayed notices highlighting the charge for unauthorised use of the staff car park? If not, this may provide a case for challenging the charge.

This is not a problem in most of Scotland, but I used to have similar problems when I lived in Hampshire especially at the Queen Alexandra hospital in Portsmouth. On the few occasions I had to go to St.Mary's hospital, I found a piece of rough car park where the contractors parked.
No one questioned me for parking there. Fortunately, work started to provide private medical care via. BUPA, and there was no problem parking there.

Statistics published today by the U.K. Department for Transport (DfT) show that in 2022 85% of the car drivers in Great Britain broke the law by driving faster than the speed limit in 20mph zones.
On roads with a 30mph maximum, 50% of car drivers broke the law, reveals the annual DfT report on speed limit compliance.
The measurements are based on speed data from a sample of Automatic Traffic Counters (ATCs) around the country.

d'ya know, now I think of it I don't think there was prominent signs ... just signs saying it was a Staff car park, No parking but I don't think it ... said anything more than that. I've paid the fine now ... but you've raised a good point so next time I'm passing that hospital ( it's in Essex)... I'll find out more .....but it' a National disgrace...

Sadly I lost my Bupa coverage when the O/h left 2 years ago we had a joit policy..I can't afford it on my own...:(

Yes I arrived early..but there's a limit to how early we can feasibly arrive because we're charged for parking by the hour...currently £3.00 per hour... and our doctors rarely see us on time.. in fact it's usual to wait an hour past our appointment time at this particular hospital

Yes people speed in the UK.... why ?:)

We lost BUPA when we retired, but although we've had to wait ages for appointments, we've generally been seen promptly. The worst thing was the admin and I wonder if departments actually talk to one another. There seems no 'joined up' approach to treatment, just individual departments with their own schedules.

Anyone who wants to know what NHS treatment is like, look at the BBC news site and there is an article by former correspondent, Rory Cellan-Jones about his recent experience.

We pay too. Now they have a new system that lets you add more time by using your cellphone or special central phones in the hospital. There were so many complaints of tickets by people being stuck in an appointment or visiting a very ill person, they finally smartened up. Still doesn’t help when there’s no parking to be found.

Doesn’t your hospitals offer valet parking, or a bus, taxi or Uber? Maybe park out on the street. Or, have a friend go along and drop you off and come back to pick you up when you call them that you are ready

One of the few good things the Scottish government did was to scrap parking charges at most NHS hospitals - if you could find a space. This was largely solved by "The Wood foundation", a philanthropic organisation who financed the building of a multi-storey car park at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. There are also a number of bus routes that serve the hospitals. There are a couple of satellite departments where you do need public parking at £1 per hour.

911- I get the feeling that you have never experienced our NHS!

lol..valet parking ?.. this is the NHS.... we're lucky to get parking at all..:( indeed we're lucky to have a hospital at all.. and that brings me to the reason none of my friends could drop me and return for me... because we don't have a hospital in my town.. not even in my part of the county. This hospital is in a completely different county :(..and there-in lies part of the problem,

This hospital like so many in the UK now are having to deal with not only their own county population but many other counties too. That along with a serious shortage of Doctors and nurses...means that we wait very long times for appointments and then when we get them there are so many scheduled for the same day, that the consultant as he did with me on that occasion.. was a whole hour late calling me in.. and then raced through my consultation so fast, I was back out again in 5 minutes

Once we had at least 2 or 3 maybe even 4 hospitals close to where everyone lived , now we have very few... and further to that we have hundreds of thousands more immigrants legal and illegals.. who are also entitled to NHS care.. so closing the hospitals, losing thousands of Medical staff.. you can see that it's just a complete farcical situation.. and then after waiting for a year for an appointment it's like a kick in the head not to be able to park, and then be stung by £100 parking fine..

ETA..no parking allowed in the streets.. that's ... all the streets surrounding the hospital unless one has resident parking

This sounds maddeningly difficult to navigate - and to get help when needed. :(
Guessing the politicians have all kinds of excuses and "we're working hard to improve that" stories.

Part of what you wrote is beginning to happen here in the U.S. Getting an appointment with a specialist or having a procedure done is becoming a real issue due to over population in certainly areas. Too many people and not enough doctors, especially specialists. Allowing all these immigrants into the country is causing us many more problems that was predicted or expected.

When my wife or I go to the hospital to visit someone, we usually use the valet. Driving around looking for a parking spot is ridiculous. It’s worth the $10 in tips to just let the valet park it and then bring it back when we’re ready to leave.

unfortunately we don't have Valet Parking at hospitals here...

Wow! You got a speeding ticket for going the equivalent of 3.8 mph over the speed limit? Pretty ticky-tack if you ask me. No wonder the fine was relatively low. ($63 USD)
When I would stop a driver for going over the speed limit and they would blame it on their cruise control, I would tell them to take their vehicle back to the garage get their cruise control recalibrated. I would show them the sticker on my radar gun and tell them, “See, my radar gun has been calibrated.”

Strange thing is I had the cruise control set at 80 and was flashed at 76kmh.
Perhaps not strange at all. Most speedometers are calibrated to read higher than the car is actually going. Our SUV speedometer registers driving as exactly 4 miles faster per hour than the car is moving. When it reads 80 mph, I'm actually going 76 mph.

It's to help prevent people from speeding.

Remote ticketing is the wave of the future. Cameras and drones are starting to be deployed on California highways and streets to ticket speeders, as well as violence episodes which are sadly more common these days.

I'd talk to your attorney if you have one before responding. In some places a photo violation is not admissible evidence. I can't say this applies in your area.
